Re: What have you been reading lately?

The Languages of Native North America by Marianne Mithun I got the book closer to the beginning of the year, but I've really only felt like I had the time to read it within the past few weeks. I finished reading up to the end of first section (phonology) of the first half of the book a few days ago...

Re: CBB Speedlanging Weekend II - [Now Operational!]

As far as my own entry, it was my first foray into polypersonal agreement, and I only found out that that is what I was attempting afterwards. I definitely want to read up on it more and develop my language further. I've actually already made a couple of changes, including nasal vowels and lack of p...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

With a language that has two lexical tones (low tone /à/ and high tone /á/), if I wanted to make the tonal distinction a vowel length distinction in a daughter language, which tone would likely become long and which would be short, if there's an inclination either way?

C(L)V(A/L) also sounds cool, but the A sounds are involved in some changes I'm thinking of that I wou...

Re: Sound changes for simple phonologies

Not only can you drop vowels, but think about eliding consonants between vowels. /g/ is a likely candidate, and Portuguese got rid of /l/ and /n/ between vowels. The resulting vowel sequences could be dealt with in any number of ways. There's also things like a/i/u-mutation; Coupled with the droppin...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

I'm really interested in deriving an a posteriori lang from a real-life proto-language (like Old English, Vulgar Latin, Proto-Slavic), but don't really know where to begin. I've read up a bit on sound change, but don't know much about how grammar changes in languages. Anyone who can point me in the ...
