Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
In my language Zuthenian I'd like to develop a series of three implosive consonants; /ɓ/, /ɗ/ and /ɠ/ contrasting with /p, t, k/ respectively). First of, you guys would reckon this natural? As far as I could see, most natlangs with implosive consonants only have one or two of the three mentioned abo...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
Thanks, you’ve given me a lot to think about already. I'm surprised the same change didn't affect the other coda /k/. This is because diachronically, word final plosives lenited to /x/ and then on to /h/ up to the current point, where they have disappeared totally. However, this became /ç/ and as su...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
My language, Zuthenian, is very reduplication-happy. However, syllable shapes are quite restricted. Only nasal coda's are allowed, as well as ʔ and ç. This, of course, yields problems now and then. I want to get rid of practically all consonant clusters. Certain monosyllabic verbs were reduplicated ...

Lexeme retention rate
This might not be the place to ask this, but could anyone help me with the following; I have begon working on the vocabulary for my proto-language. This is ofcourse all well and good, but I began to question how many lexemes would "survive" into the present day stage of the language. Is th...

Could anyone inform me on what the applicative voice is and how it could be employed as a substitute for certain case markings on the noun?

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
Would anyone know what the Old Church Slavonic "ъ" would correspond to in IPA? I'm thinking /ɨ̞/, but I'm not even totally sure if it is a real vowel in that sense. Thanks in advance.

A certain discrepancy
As a student of slavistics, I am fairly aware of the fact that the phonology of a language can differ greatly from the way it is written and "supposed" to be pronounced. As you might know, this is very much the case with russian. English and french come to mind as other examples of languag...
