Re: Weird Dream Thread
But a pretty one. One time, I was driving up I-5, and I wanted to take US-97. Missed the turnoff, and I was to Medford by the time I realized it. So I cut over through the heaviest of the forest, and even though it added an hour to an already 14-hour drive, it was something I'd love to do again. Ye...

Re: Weird Dream Thread
Normally I dream about things like biking through Klamath National forest from Walla Walla, WA to Portland, OR on a school-owned cruiser bike that isn't supposed to leave campus. (The weird thing is, Klamath National Forest is in the wrong part of Oregon for this to be possible.) But now I just wan...

Re: Yay or Nay?
Shall I romanize /ʔ/ as <h> or <j> or <'>? I am not too fond of the apostrophe because it makes me feel like it isn't as much a letter as the other sounds that get a full Latin glyph... But I also have /h/ in the language, so while the glottal stop could be <h> and the /h/ <j> (similar to Spanish) ...

No, the language names are full nouns and operate independently of "langue". If we took loglorn's post, and pretended it was actually in French, he would have said "Quelle est cette langue intéressante …?" Therefore, in your response, you say "Je crois que cette langue est ...

Re: Language practice thread
Je crois qu'il est que c'est / qu'elle est l' albanais. The original sentence means "I think he is Albanian". So you need the article. And if you want to use a gender pronoun, "elle" works better than "il", seeing as "langue" is feminine. Thanks. Although, Wi...

Re: Question on Phoneme Inventory Sizes
Oh, indeed. It would be laughable to call any of my conlangs anything more than 1% complete, and I've not stopped working on them at all. I'd never have a plan to just leave them at the phonology, that's simply where I absolutely have to begin.

Re: Question on Phoneme Inventory Sizes
[rant]I have always thought the "start with the phonology" idea was bad advice. Not that it's the best strategy, but I always thought "start with complex sentences and paragraphs and work backwards to the sounds" would have been better than "start with the sounds and work u...

It's not very pretty, but I hope it's clear. I wish I knew how you guys create those pretty tables, but I'm all thumbs when it comes to computer skills. Does anyone here have the know-how to put up something prettier? Easiest way I can think of is to take screenshots of a spreadsheet or word-proces...

Re: Phonotactics in onset-clusters and coda-clusters.
What about sm-? Are there any English words that end in -ms? I can't think of any. I believe /-ms/ always gets pronounced /-mz/ in English. Interestingly, the same isn't true for /ns/. For example: prince /prɪns/. Although this may have slight affrication for many speakers, myself included, I'm pre...

Re: Phonotactics in onset-clusters and coda-clusters.
But that would be at best controversial: orthodox syllabification puts the syllable-boundary where the morpheme-boundary is. That's interesting. I guess syllables actually are lexical units then, in some way (as opposed to phonetic units). I wonder if this would hold true for a language like French...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
@Teddy Hmm, thanks for the answer. The way you put it definitely makes sense, but I'm afraid my examples were rather poor. I believe I understand it better now. So the distinction is really more between finite/completeable and non-finite/non-completeable (finite as in the general sense, not the gram...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
So, if I'm understanding telicity correctly (which is highly unlikely), telic verbs (or constructions) are those which are “conceptualized as having endpoints” (ripping from Wikipedia here), while atelic verbs are conceptualized as not having endpoints. My question is, are these endpoints in a telic...

Hey Ossicone, I've got a bit of an update for you. For Mac users, beginning with OS X 10.9, you can access the Character Viewer by pressing Command-Control-Space from any application. By default, this will be an Emoji viewer, but if you click the button in the upper right corner (looks like a tiny w...

And in fact, even if the image were larger, I probably wouldn't be able to judge the naturalistic-ness of the verb forms; but I thought I'd give it a try.
