Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
Does it seem reasonable that in a lang with largely (C)C-C roots that there be a rule disallowing /ʕ/ and /ɣ/ to both be in a root? Note that either can occur as plain, palatilised, or labialised. So really the rule would disallow any two of the six /ʕ ʕʷ ʕʲ ɣ ɣʷ ɣʲ/ from co-occuring in a root. [ /s...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
I've got syntax questions... Imagine an agglutinative language where only subjects can be made heads of relative clauses*. Making arguments other than subjects heads of relative clauses is done by a combination of applicatives (oblique argument > direct object) and passive (direct object > subject)...

Re: Updated Hiding Waters (née Feayran) Grammar
I really enjoyed reading this grammar. I thought the ideas in it were fresh, and it was neatly arranged. Certainly made my commute more interesting (though I think I put off some people by trying to pronounce your horrific consonant clusters). The idea of split roots is fascinating, especially now i...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
Having a little problem with how best to romanize/transcribe the vowels and accent for a conlang. I've got the following vowels: short: /ä ɛ ɪ ʊ/ long: /ɑː æː eː oː iː uː/ closing diphthongs /äɪ̯ ɛɪ̯ ʊɪ̯ äʊ̯ ɛʊ̯/ opening diphthongs /iɛ̯ uɔ̯/ I also have a pitch accent, where a single syllable withi...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
@ sangi39,Vlürch,Sal,Linguofranco Thanks for the feedback. My broadstrokes idea of how this inventory came to be was an initial inventory of /a a: i i: u u: y (y:?) ai au ay/. Then, certain reductions occur in unstressed syllables: /ai/ > /e/ /au/ > /o/ /ay/ > /ø/ /V:/ > /V/ which leaves only /a i u...

An Approach to Translations: Catabolism then Anabolism
Hi all, I just thought I'd write this for the benefit of anyone who's struggling a bit with translations. I've found that it can be disheartening once I've chosen something to translate, and have it take hours to invent all the relevant vocabulary and grammar. As such, I employ a method whereby I ta...

Re: Compound generator thread
Having done some snooping, I'm pretty sure 'galaxy' comes from the Greek gála (genetive galaktos ) for 'milk'. Look here: https://www.etymonline.com/word/Galaxy https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/galaxy But I'm not 100% sure about the spilled breastmilk myth. Where'd dogfish come from? Anyhow, as no one...

Re: Compound generator thread
@Khemehekis - the animal name thread seems to have disappeared. Building on Sal's point of not being to 'logical' or 'philosophical' about this, I think it's also worth noting how mythology can affect where words originate from. A classic being 'galaxy', which comes from the myth of Hera suckling He...

Anyone know a good/reliable resource for finding the 1000/1500/2000 most common words in Modern Standard Arabic?

True, true. That's helpful, Nort, so thanks. Gives me thoughts.the only language I know of with *tʰ > r̥ is Nivkh, and Nivkh doesn't object at all to /r̥/ in clusters

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread
A question on diachronics So I have /tʰ/ which changes to /r̥/ when bounded by vowels or a word boundary. e.g.: /tʰatʰ/-> /r̥ar̥/, /atʰa/ -> /ar̥a/. However, I am having trouble deciding what /tʰ/ should become when adjacent to other consonants, particularly stops and voiced sonorants. The current ...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
@Ahzoh Not sure if this helps, but in one of my langs I diachronically generated /ʝ ɣʷ/ like so: /ɣiV ɣuV/ -> /ɣʲV ɣʷV/ -> /ʝV ɣʷV/ Might work without those final vowels. So I have /tʰ/ which changes to /r̥/ when bounded by vowels or a word boundary. e.g.: /tʰatʰ/-> /r̥ar̥/, /atʰa/ -> /ar̥a/. Howeve...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
I'm designing roots. Would it be beyond the scope of naturalism if verbal roots were differently constrained (phonetically) from noun roots? My idea is to have verbal roots be: - monosyllabic - require a consonant onset while noun roots be: - monosyllabic OR disyllabic - not require a consonant onse...

Any ideas how infixes arise?
I know analogised metathesis is one way, but I wanted to find a way for vowel infixing.

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
Just a quick question. From the change in PIE of /penkʷe/ to Latin's /kʷinkʷe/, the initial /p/ has changed to /kʷ/ due to assimilation (or some kind of assonance). But what I was wondering is: what caused the vowel /e/ to change to /i/? Was is just the effect of the high tongue in /k/ in the /kʷ/ p...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
@Tuyono Classical Arabic has two reciprocal constructions I know of. One is to use the word 'some' ("ba3ḍ") /baʕdˤ/ twice, the first instance usually taking a plural pronoun suffix, and the second taking the definite article 'al'. li-ba3ḍ-ihim al-ba3ḍ for-other-3PL.M DEF-other "For th...
