Re: Rambling about a somewhat routine classical language

There is so much stuff in the message that it's a bit hard to read. And you are talking about complex things without explaining its parts, but so conlangs develop. Yeah; I will take this into account in any future posting. If the consonant inventory lacked /p/ or /g/, would it be more interesting o...

Rambling about a somewhat routine classical language

Preface I have hitherto dedicated my efforts to a language called Dhaujai. Over the past year, I sought to combine Japanese and Romantic grammatical patterns, which lead to wild variations in head directionality, morphology, and syntax in general. In short, the latter is a mess and I am done with it...

Re: What languages influence your conlangs?

The new Moonshine has again moved away from my original goals so long ago, but I'd say that unlike Poswa it retains a strong European influence in both its phonology and grammar, though I'm only just now working out the basics of the grammar as I've uprooted everything I came up with when I was you...

... even if the planet ends up a hothouse I hope it could still be suitable for civilization. I suppose it could lead to cool sounding architecture. If you're inclined toward engineering you could handle their drainage systems. But for all I know your world is inhabited by nomadic sapient turtles w...

Re: (C&C) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

What effect on climate would the distribution of the continents have? There's land at both poles, which means no circumpolar currents and no stormy bands of low pressure: water from mid latitudes will regularly mix with water from high latitudes. On the other hand, there's water all around the equa...

Re: Chirpie, a musical conlang

Generally, words of similar meaning have similar sounds, as with "mother," "sister" and "grandmother." "Mother" is "do-re," "sister" is "do-re" with double notes, and "grandmother" is "do-re" with triples. Sim...

I like this language. I'm not brave enough to even think about ergative alignment. Is it going to be a big literary standard in this world?

Re: False cognates

This is a little off topic, but I was going to suggest :ita: cane and the on'yomi of :jpn: 犬, (けん, ken), but the wiktionary entry for the ultimate Proto-Sino-Tibetan ancestor of ken doesn't seem to rule that connection out. Of course, I am no scholar of Chinese linguistics. That article, if anyone ...

Re: Palatalization(?) help

Thank you both for your help. As for [g], for now I'm going to have an unconditional shift to [ɣ]. This, in turn, will drop altogether word initially, become [j] elsewhere, and develop into [ʒ] when lenited left of [i:] and [ i ], the latter transforming into modern [ɪ]. The only issue I could think...

Palatalization(?) help

I want my conlang to have palatalization in front of /i/ and /ɪ/, but in the voiced stops only (and the ones that are not labial, because, yeah). Like: /di/ > /d͡ʒi/ and /gi/ > /ʒi/. So first off, I can't really find any examples of languages that do this without doing the same thing in the voiceles...

Re: Conworlders' religious influences on conworlds

Obviously, you can find symbols, iconography, motifs and narratives that are familiar from Christianity or Buddhism. But rather, the greater influence is upon the underlying conception & nature of the invented world. And, of course, this influence can perhaps best be observed in the lives and e...
