Re: Indo-European Naturalistic Conlang?

The #1 problem I've seen with PIE-langs is historical disconnect. This mostly takes one of two forms: either a lack of interest in the process of how a language could descend from PIE into the target form, or a lack of interest in context. The first often shows itself as a desire to hit an "end...

Amazing. Did not disappoint! I'm not sure which ring I enjoyed more, but I will never feel quite the same way when I hear a cow moo.

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Mostly consonantal syllables are unstressed. Mostly consonantal syllables don’t have onset clusters nor coda clusters. Mostly consonantal syllables don’t have both an onset and a coda. Most consonantal syllables are at most two phonemes long. In American English, the word "word" violates ...

Say, that's really good! Not much else to contribute, but I like these maps.

Re: "Remix Earth"

I once tried a sorghum beer because they were selling it for one dollar at a bar. It was probably the single most foul thing I have ever put in my mouth. It tasted like mud and porridge with an after taste of old pennies.

Re: "Remix Earth"

Just a personal experience, but I really don't like sorghum. The idea of a sorghum-and-bean malt slurry baked until it makes a dry, mealy "flatbread" sounds like a good way to dread every meal. But maybe the saffron makes it better.

Re: "Remix Earth"

Very fun. The monsoonal grassland habitat is not a common focus for conworlding projects. If you get sick of sorghum sugar, palm sugar would also grow in these irrigated gardens.

Hooooo boy , lots to unpack here. One of my biggest pet-peeves (it isn't necessarily "bad conworlding" it just personally is unappealing to me) is when there are concultures that are very transparent analogues of Earth cultures. You know, you've got your fantasy Romans, your fantasy Norsem...

I can't believe I didn't mention this one already, but English barley[/i] and Korean bori[/i] always felt pretty close to me. The stop is phonetically unvoiced, but still.

Forgive my ignorance, but who is going to translate the text from Old Wenthish and Epos back to Cambresc? No one will be translating the text back into Cambresc. The starting text is in English, which Jackk translated into Cambresc. Then who is translating the text back into English at the end?

Re: False friends and other unfortunate coincidences

So to recap: 1) hnomn and nimi are related because they have multiple elements in common 2) all of those elements but /n/ may be jettisoned if problematic 3) if the remaining single element is insufficient to prove relation, re-introduce the jettisoned elements 4) if the re-introduced elements are p...

I hate to interrupt, but the Finnish word siemen would seem to contradict any possibility of *nimi being derived from *hnomn.

Re: Magical Economics

I think this comic does a great job of demystifying how super abilities interact with real world economics. Of course magic users could be too precious to use their abilities for anything boring or menial. But then another social class of magic users might come along and supplant them. The tradition...

Re: Roman Emperor Statistics

I was surprised by these results. My understanding was that the western empire collapsed in large part because they couldn't establish a coherent method of succession, and so they were in a near-constant state of civil war. But this data suggests that the process of succession became more streamline...

When I took Japanese lessons years ago, I was amused by the way Japanese kane 'bell' resembled German Kanne 'jug' - as if the Japanese used jugs for bells ;) You must have thought something similar about namae and Name . While we're in Asia, some Korean words for "river" and "liver&q...
