Re: Introduction thread(s)

Hi guys, I'm ilaeriu. I'm not really new to CBB -- in fact I've technically been on CBB since just before CBB moved to be hosted on this particular site six (!!) years ago. But I sadly gradually stopped posting and conworlding about five-ish years ago, until today I had a sudden longing for my old c...

Re: hases san|anai (Gotta catch them all!)

By the way, does anyone see any major problems with having 'them all' as being homophonous with 'everything/everybody'? If your language doesn't distinguish them grammatically, then there shouldn't be a problem. Filipino Tagalog doesn't really have separate words for those concepts, we use <silang ...

Re: Poll: Best/Worst Natlang Orthography

I think the Welsh orthography is one of my favourites. I love how they use <w>. http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lt8b4r1oLK1qckgmgo1_500.gif But Korean Hangul wins by far - how I just love it! It's really beautiful. Greenlandic is cool, but that has more to do with how the language actually look i...

Re: Language practice thread

Oh, I didn't know about that first thing! Cool! My Korean buddy who I ask about stuff sometimes usually just uses <u> for it, the romanization he writes with is pretty hard to understand so I normally just ask him to write it in Hangeul. I just think it looks very visually unappealing, there's noth...

Rosetta Stone Software: Yes or No?

So I just torrented Levels 1-3 of Rosetta Stone for Mandarin, and I have to admit that it's not bad at all. (Please don't comment on the fact that I torrented it - please take the piracy wars to another thread, thanks :D) I'm learning vocab pretty quickly, quicker than if I just studied lines of tex...

Re: The worst sounding natlang ever

Someone at wikipedia has humour. It must be said: the worst sounding natlang has to be the Anal language, which, as Wikipedia helpfully tells us, is not to be confused with the Anus language. The first sample vocabulary on the "Anal" page is 'deep hole' I think I'm actually tearing (as in...

Re: The man sees the woman using the telescope.

Pretty sure there can be no ambiguity when written in Korean. In the first example, the particle -로 is added onto the noun "telescope" which I'm pretty sure is some sort of instrumentative marker, instead of using the word "using". In the second example, the "woman using the...

Re: I don't drink alcohol

I don't think the ambiguity is retained in Korean. 종교적인은 이유는 술 마실 수 없어요. religious-ADJ reason-ADJ alcohol drink can't "I can't drink alcohol-that-is-for-religious-reasons." The adjectival system works by tacking on the dependent clause onto the front of the noun, so instead of saying "...

Re: Are your main conpeople human or of a different species?

Theres a good eight or nine "races" in my conworld, with one of them being human. I guess you could call them the "main" race, since the period of history I'm fleshing out right now has one of the human empires in control of much of the world. After humans, the next closest race ...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

One single monosyllabic CV word is enough to make you ask that question? [:S] You never know, you know? That's actually just a rather odd coincidence; I haven't really smoothed out the vocabulary of the lang yet, and as of now, /bi/ has no set meaning. I chose "rain" and "to rain&quo...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

I might be butting in on a discussion, but is a vowel inventory of /i e ɜ ɑ ʏ ɔ o ɒ/ to unnatural for a lang to have? The last four are occurred through a process where, for example, /i/ morphed to /i:/ to indicate a verb for which a noun root already exists (as in /bi/- rain, and /bi:/-to rain, ra...
