Re: What is your conpeople's greatest flaw?

Atlians, in general, are both strongly individualistic and on another level strongly nationalistic. Arguably these are not bad qualities in themselves, but they do quite often go to the extremes of selfishness and jingoism, which I think most people would agree are not desirable. Viksens tend to be ...

I like it.

And I think I prefer your "disparate" style to Sano's tendency toward overly-similar letters.

Re: etymology vs. plagiarism

From what I've gleaned it's acceptable/commonplace to borrow words from natural foreign languages when word building. To be honest I think a lot of people who consider themselves "proper" conlangers would refuse to do even that, unless there's a very good reason (i.e. the language is set ...

Re: Non-spheroid conworlds

A flat (or flat-topped, at least) world is the main setting of the book I'm writing at the moment. I'm aware of a few problems like how rivers and seas work, but ultimately it's another world heavily dominated by magic and my solution to any issues that may arise is literally "the wizards did i...

Re: I fail.

I think I have personally achieved better results by constantly revising (often drastically) many of my languages over a period of years, rather than what a lot of people do which is to keep starting completely new languages every time one doesn't work out. That way, you can at least keep the featur...

Re: Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Yeah, the consonant inventory doesn't look all that Englishy; it actually looks like an average phonology with a few more fricatives thrown in. But it would be easier to tell if you put them in some sort of order, like /p b t d k f v θ s z ʃ h m n l r/.[/url] It could be argued that "an averag...

Re: Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

How can I justify (historically, culturally, biologically...) the choice of nonary (base-9) numeral system for my con-people? Maybe a historico-biological explanation could be that your people have three fingers per hand, meaning their earliest counting systems were base three. However this proved ...

Re: Money!

The use of money in the Vixor can be traced back ultimately to the Kohol Empire to the north, which made use of small pebbles of particular sizes and shapes engraved with certain symbols as a system of economic exhange from at least around 2300 BC. By the emergence of the Nakta Empire in around 110...

Re: Religion/Philosophy of Your Conculture(s)

I have a lot of religions in my world(s) ... The polytheistic Old Viksorian religion and its relatives, the monotheistic Damaism (the most important modern-day religion) are the ones I've elaborated to the greatest extent. There's also Triism (which considers the number three to be supreme, and base...

Re: How do you design your conscripts?

I find that some of my scripts turn out well and others just don't. I don't know why. It might help if you try creating your scripts by hand rather than my computer (as the script in your first post seems to have been), as that's more likely to generate a "soft, flowing" appearance. Anothe...

Re: my conworld: saza

My first thought on seeing your language was "that's a particularly nice-looking conlang" - the length of the words didn't really strike me. A lot of languages have some very long words, and English would have a lot of words that are a lot longer than they are if it wasn't for our habit of...

Re: What got you started in Conlanging?

For me it was basically that when I was younger I had a made-up world, and I was sensible enough to realise that for everyone to just start speaking English just wasn't realistic. It really took off when I discovered Langmaker.com maybe seven or eight years ago, and in the months following also came...

Re: Tala, as Seen From Space [+Tutorial]

The globe looks great. Are those big lights suns or lense flares? If the former I can't help but think the central one is a bit too big - wouldn't the surface of the planet just burn up? Whatever the case, it seems to me as if you've got the direction of lighting mixed up: how come we can see the ne...

OH MY CTHULHU. Do you really have this problem in English? Prosody. Learn it. What MrKrov is trying to say here is something along the lines of: "If you have a predictable stress rule or similar, the problem you are worried about will not arise." If, say, you have a rule that says the fir...

It guesses the first two verses of the Greater Atlian Babel text - Yibzu, kasse Sseenkirussi ühussii usso lu ohoyi. Ussehu mu ssireyi u kotessi, kaassihu oowoonessido pokai samupu u Ssinaressi, u poru u tarrau. - as Finnish. (Which happens to be what I predicted it would guess - the orthography does...

Re: Con-Weaponry

I've always thought a cool weapon would be a sort of spear-shield combo - think of it like an umbrella, only the "cloth" bit is made of thick leather and the bit that sticks out the top is made of metal and very sharp. I've not yet formally made this part of my conworld, but I like to thin...
