In the same time, I also had some interesting (to me) thoughts about my conlangs and concultures; though I haven’t yet written the most recent ones down.

What does “natlang” mean?

I think it almost always means “natural language”, but, I can think of two other possibilities (three possibilities in all). It could mean “national language”; that is, any language which is the official national language of some currently-existing national-state. It could mean “native language”; th...

What does this oxymoron mean ? [/size] Admittedly, I thought it was an oxymoron, but it means that the word order can be (S)VO or (S)OV, and adpositions can be in either place. Fluid, but with set rules. Thanks! (IMO that will be easy to remember once one is told, but nearly impossible to guess.)

Re: Anybody else working on conlangs with non-human phonologies?

If you're working on a language that isn't pronounceable by humans, how did you come up with the phonology? Is it in a medium other than sound? Can it be written? Can humans even understand it at all? Does it require more than three dimensions to perceive? I think I probably need to; but I haven’t ...

Do I need something analogous to the Carboniferous period to justify the presence of fossil fuels? Loosely, yes. But it doesn’t have to be too analogous! Can the same plastics we use IRL be made without using petroleum products? Loosely, probably so. But it’d take some thought to come up with an al...

Do you mean the Briticism for “to vomit” and/or “to be nauseous”?

Because in North American English, “sick” means “diseased”, “ill”.

Not a criticism; merely a request for clarification!

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

This recently came up elsewhere, and I was shown to not have quite as much knowledge as my confidence afforded. So I pose the question here: in an ergative language, or a language or scenario within a language that places greater importance on the patient, will the patient precede the agent? Will t...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

For general tendencies you can look at the Sonority Sequencing Principle and the Syllable Contact Law. Of course exceptions to these make a conlang more 'interesting' in a way. I usually think of onset clusters and coda clusters first, the combination of which give me my medial clusters. Then I exc...
