Re: A One World Language

With simpl cahnsistent fo'netik repre'senta'shun. well, one would come to that conclusion thinking things from first principles, but it seems to be the case that the most universal languages in our own planet at this age have the funkiest of orthographies. english and mandarin, that is, and that do...

Re: Making a Music Culture?

I'm not sure why you'd need 9:4 to be considered maximally consonant tbh. also it's, again, in the end not even that alien of a scale (just stacking tetrachords -is that the term?- that add up to a fifth, not the doubled carlos alpha). check this out: https://voca.ro/1c2rQICiWKXh it's just a noodle,...

Re: Making a Music Culture?

I also ignore the exact meaning of P5 equivalence but I'm gonna go head and assume that it means something like octave equivalence but for fifths, that is to say that the fifth would play the same role in this music system as the octave plays in ours. In principle this is not as problematic as one m...

Re: A One World Language

Oh, that's cool. I just had heard it from like X-men cartoons. I don't think any conlang -or natlang- is more suitable to be a one world language than any other. it's power that defined these things. I don't think English is special or different in any way other than being the language of the guys w...

Re: A One World Language

agreed with sangi. also, english isn't the language of accountants. it is already the language of everything: science, programming, fandoms, pornography, conworlding (have you seen a 'conlangs en español' group? they suck), etcetera. the world already has a language, bub. and it came about the only ...

Re: Magical Economics

I think my problem with magic is not magic but the concept of magic. I was reading this thread and at one point Salmoneus lists obviously magical things and someone asks 'why do you consider those things magic' and, obviously, after the first "of course they're magic silly" moment I had to...

Re: The Kabu, more sentient elephants

I never noticed some people wrote it aioli! my grandma always said alioli <she taught me the recipe> and I guess my brain always corrected the word to the form I know. but yeah, garlic and olive oil just stirred up until it becomes an emulsion similar to mayo. I don't think a Slon would be very happ...

Re: Silicon-based life

@Torco, thanks for your answer, it got me thinking. If I research silicon compounds, I can come up with things sort of analogous to wood, bug shells, and the like, I think. oh, excelsior! please do post them here, i remember once upon a time wanting to do so, but decided against it on account of I ...

Re: The Kabu, more sentient elephants

Thanks! It just so happens I had worked some of the gastronomy of the Kabu. I'm somewhat less certain of this, but what I did to figure out what they eat is first think about dietary preferences in general: for humans, there's a few spectra that I think are relevant: more vs. less calorie dense (hon...

Re: Silicon-based life

It's pretty hard to prove a negative, but yeah, silicon life seems less likely than it seemed a while back. even if it was likely, the short answer to your question is that no one actually knows or has a lot of an idea, sadly. Think about it, how is water-carbon based life? the most we can say is &q...

The Kabu, more sentient elephants

A few threads on this board, in particular the one about the Tembo, have made me want to revisit my own sentient elephants. A quick contextualization: this world is a smaller rocky planet called Suenu, inhabited by humans, slon and a bunch of other animals. I don't know if there are more sentients i...

Apparently this is approximately equal to all unmarried men under 30. lmao makes sense tbh I have a feeling that the famed roman superiority in engineering (roads and so on) came after its consolidation as a large power. the first aqueduct is in -300, after the defeat of the samnites, and baths and...

Re: A note on urban population thresholds

It was informative and thought-provoking. I especially like the typology of cities, and I'll use it. I've lately been marinating an idea regarding this very thing. I don't swear by it, but this is it: What if it's not about agricultural productivity, but political effectiveness that drives this? The...

Re: The Tembo: A Race of Sapient Elephants

Yeah, I remember doing some similar math back in the day, and cities don't work out. even towns start being things you go to, as opposed to places you live and then commute to your farm. the densities have the disadvantages you mention and they're perhaps even worse for elephants, since it takes the...
