Silly Conlangs?
Here's one I made today just for fun... Consonants are: Stops /p pˤ p̪ʼ p̪ b̪ b̪ˤ ʈ ʈʰ q qʷ qʼ ɢ/ Fricatives /β ʂ ʂʷ χ ħ ʕ h ɦ/ Trills/Flaps /ʙ ʙˤ ʀ ɺ/ Nasals /m ɱ ɱʲ ɱˤ ɳ ɴ/ Approximates /ɭ ʟ β̞ ʋ ʋˤ ɰ/ Vowels /y y̹ ɯ ɪ ɪ̞ ʏ ʊ ɤ œ œ̜ æ ɜ ɜ̞ ɞ ɞ̹/ Syllable structure is (F(S|T|A)|ST|(N)A)V(V)((S)F|(A...

Re: Restricted Phonetics?
Okay, here are some sketches of some of me ideas: They have a glottis but are incapable of consciously controlling its movements. This means ejectives and implosives are out, and also means they're unable to stop breathing when they talk. Egressive/Ingressive distinction perhaps? No nose. They evolv...

Re: Why is it that most IALs simply dont work? (very long)
Ultimately I don't think language choice can be criticized more than any other economic choice. People learn languages according to their usefulness and languages adapt to the needs of speakers quite naturally. No matter how well designed an IAL simply can't match that.
Re: Siaru
To get back on topic...
How does /ʀ/ modify the vowels it precedes?
Also, it's really weird to have /w~v/ and /v/. Perhaps you meant to write /w~ʋ/?

Re: Siaru
Caught is definitely /ɔ/ not /a/. *I am late. Damn you speedy posters. That's not how I pronounce it, then again phonetic analysis on yourself never works very well. Do you say 'cot' and 'caught' the same then? Yep, both as /ɑ/, though I pronounce cot with [ɑ] and caught with [ɒ]. Yeah I do it back...

By the way, Na'vi from the movie Avatar definitely does contrast /a/ and /æ/. Though it's a conlang so it probably shouldn't count.

English does. cat vs. caught, for example.Yačay256 wrote:/{/ is almost [if not] always represented by <A> as I know of no lang that contrasts /{/ and /a/
Re: Siaru
Thank you! This info really should be in the first post. As well, what about the phonotactics information? That's pretty important to morpheme formation... As for your othography, shouldn't /æ/ be represented with a modification of a? As a last thought, I absolutely can't stand [ŋ]. Whenever I see i...

Restricted Phonetics?
I'm not sure if this should go in the conlanging or the conworlding section as it kinda has to do with both. I'm thinking of semi-sentient, "beast races" for my conworld. I want them to have conlang(s) to use as to be able to facilitate at least some level communication between more "...

Re: Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
How do you make a phonology? Was that "how does one make a phonology?" or "how do you make a phonology?"? I usually just fiddle about. First I'll add some basics, then add some, then remove some, change some etc. For consonants I just add/remove dimensions, then touch a few pecu...

The language given has no phonotactic information and little allophony, but given the other info:Bristel wrote:Examples, please. The phonology seems pleasant, but I'd love to see examples.

Re: Agyonnar
Actually, I don't know the proper terms neither, but nevertheless it's helpful :). I still have questsions about your gloss. First of all what is the particle "na" for? And is the word "change" a verb or a noun, so that "world change" is either a compound or a noun phr...
Re: Agyonnar
Thanks for the replies everyone. Contrasting / j / with / ʝ / and no velars was a central part of my phonology design from the very beginning. It's a better start, but being SOV and not having articles or nominal coding at all isn't particularly "Japanese-y". I suppose not, though Japanese...
Agyonnar
Since my last topic was abysmal, I present a more complete language this time. Not terribly interesting but I like it. Consonants: In order of sonority: /p t c b d ɟ ts dz s f θ ç z v ð ʝ m n ɲ l ʎ ɹ j/ <p t ty b d gy ts dz s f th hy z v dh zy m n ny l ly r y> Vowels: /a e i o u/ Agyonnar has a sing...

Re: Mineka
Like I said, very early stages. What you see is basically all that's done. I take it I should wait until it is more complete to post here.
As for the vowel-heaviness, this is mostly to counteract the lack of consonant clusters. Should I merge to /a a˞/?

Hai everyone! A phonology I'm working on, very early stages. Thoughts? Vowels Normal: /a o u i y e ø ʌ ɑ ɛ ɔ/ (Every normal vowel has an alternative long vowel version) Rhotacized: /a˞ o˞ u˞ i˞ y˞ ɚ/ Nasal: /ã õ ẽ ĩ/ Diphthongs: /ai ei oi ɑi ɛi ɔi au ɑu/ Consonants Plosives: /p t̪ c k b d̪ ɟ g/ Fric...
