Re: What did you accomplish today?
Heh. Funny story there - I went to the marina last night to meet a friend in the restaurant and ended up waiting there for her for half an hour while a duo of testosterone-laden teenage boys attempted (pitifully) to hit on me. When I was bored irritating them with my lack of reaction to their chees...

Re: Echoing words from L1
Interesting! I have words in my heartlang(?) that are inspired from the world around me, but not really by words from Earth languages. The only word I know that resembles a word from real languages is nau (I, me), similar to the equivalent Korean word. But it's not is my L1...

Re: Poll: Best/Worst Natlang Orthography
I think the Welsh orthography is one of my favourites. I love how they use <w>. http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lt8b4r1oLK1qckgmgo1_500.gif But Korean Hangul wins by far - how I just love it! It's really beautiful. Greenlandic is cool, but that has more to do with how the language actually look in...

Re: The worst sounding natlang ever
I watched a Korean movie a few moths ago where these girls sounded really stupid and whiny ('blablablabla-yOOOOooooOOOoooOOooo' kinda). That kind of Korean was really ugly. But then I watched this other movie on cinema, where this lady spoke so beautifully and had the most genuine, loving laugh. Tha...

Re: suomi
Don't worry, the Google Translate part was as much of a joke as the rest of it. I don't actually use Google Translate or any other translator either. =)
Mitä kuuluu, then? Or is that old-fashioned these days? Perhaps I should withdraw silently now, since I'm not languaging in Finnish.

Re: Pronouncation ability survey
I have no idea how to pronounce the glottal stop. When I listen to the Wikipedia audio I just hear a period of quiet between two a s. That's pretty much what it is though, mostly only audible between vowels and at the end of words. I guess you could see it as the null consonant, i.e. when a syllable...

Re: Logographic Systems: Pros and Cons
Yes, Hangul is my absolute favourite too! I also love Canadian Aboriginal syllabics. I think I secretly like the Hebrew alphabet too. I admire the design, especially in modern day writing. Also many South and South-East Asian scirpts are pretty.

Re: Logographic Systems: Pros and Cons
Regarding Chinese, I find it a lot easier to read hanzi characters than pinyin (I really do!). And as always, a logographic script unites many typologically similar languages, even if they differ in pronunciation. That is, speakers read more or less the same text and they all understand it. In theor...

Yeah, that was pretty much what I got too! Hilarious, but very insteresting phonetically!Chagen wrote:Yeah.
At least, I can do a lengthened nasalized rhoaticized vowel.
Though it sounds completely ridiculous. Seriously, I can't help but laugh at it.

Re: Formative conlangs
Oh, fun topic! I've learned that my phonconology share a lot of inventory with the phonology of Inualeut languages. It is a polysynthetic language, but other than that, no vocabulary or such in common, unless by coincidence. But I have no specific source of inspiration, just what feels right in my h...

Re: Cangtagx
I prefer <x> over <u>, it fills the purpose of representing the sound as a very variable one (given the different allophones) and of course emphasizes the unroundedness. Keep it! =)

I promise, I'm not being sarcastic! I just happen to like small phonemic inventories.CrazyEttin wrote:I really have hard time believing people are not being sarcastic about this.
EDIT: And it's "hyvä" in nominative. "Hyvän" is accusative or genetive.
Right, hyvä then. Thank you.

I love it!
I adore /p t k ʔ/! I think you just described my favourite phonological inventory! Oh, the littleness! And so few vowel contrasts, mmm! =P
Not sarcasm!
Hyvän äänneoppi. <-- Because I saw your signature, sorry. =) It'd be so cool if I got it right tho...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
So, what do you prefer - should i "transphonate" or "transgraphate"? I think what you want is to say, "should my transliteration be more phonemic or phonetic?" It's up to you, I think--either way would be acceptable, but typically, transliterations tend to be more phon...
