Re: Forum News discussion/feedback thread
I think it would be good to elaborate on the purpose of personal threads. Did you grab that idea from the UniLang forum? At UniLang, there is a difference between personal threads and conversation threads, but it isn't clear to me whether you're replicating that here... At UniLang personal threads,...

Qu'est-ce que vous avez fait cette fin de semaine, vous autres? Moi, j'ai fait des changements au site, y compris la mise en ordre de ce forum.
What have you guys been doing this weekend? As for me, I've made changes to the board, including setting up this forum.

Re: Forum News discussion/feedback thread
I can appreciate that in an abstract sense. But sudden mass deletion of people's posts is a little unfair, don't you think? Yes, that is true, but I did not delete the forum into the void! I archived all the threads, and am currently sorting through them, since many of the threads can be relabeled ...

Re: Forum News discussion/feedback thread
Wait, all the non-English stuff has just been deleted!? [I mean, I know I wasn't using it anyway, but...] The main issue with the non-English section was that hardly anybody used it. During the past six months only two threads had got any new posts at all. Another problem was that it wasn't being u...

The Language Learning & Non-English forum
This forum is dedicated to the studying of natural languages (and special-case conlangs like Esperanto) , and to discussions in languages other than English. It is thus aimed at those who want to learn and study such a language, and at those who already speak a language other than English and want t...

Re: False friends and other unfortunate coincidences
Various languages Sutra vs. :hrv: <sutra> "tommorow" Maybe I'm missing some meaning of the former, since it's not defined, but I don't really see how these are either false friends or unfortunate coincidences? This is definitely a false friend, what leads you to say it isn't? False friend...

:esp: Sueco "Swede" and zueco "clog" Both pronounced exactly the same outside of Spain and I could see people thinking they're related since Sweden is home to träskor Hmm, zueco pretty clearly comes from Latin soccus , so I wonder why the initial consonant fronted. Italian also ...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
Maybe it's because native speakers tend to naïvely perceive it as "pronouncing the t like a d", whether they have it in their dialect or not. This is what I suspected, but all the references to /d/ were of this kind, which looks too much like a layman's approximation for me to be able to ...

Does anyone know if /d/ is turned into [ɾ] in New Zealand English for speakers who also do this with /t/? I find plenty of sources who talk about /t/ but no one mentions /d/...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
I've started noticing when reading English language academic papers about linguistics, that often times French quotes are left completely untranslated. I've seen enough papers do this that I'm wondering whether or not it's standardized in the field maybe or at least was at some time. Anyone else ev...

I enjoyed reading this presentation. It's well-structured and your images are pleasing to look at. It was a good selection of information for an initial presentation, I find. Re: Romance tidbits
Would you happen to know where the second /l/ comes from in Catalan malalt 'sick'? French (malade) and Italian (malato) both lack it, but Occitan has malaut, which seems to have existed in Old Catalan as well, leading me to guess that it might be a hypercorrection of [awt] > [aɫt]?
