I had a dream that was Queen Victoria meets Jane Austen meets the Mississippi(?) River. It was framed as a sort of documentary about Victoria's life before becoming queen. Victoria, her sisters and her mother were moving into a house on the edge of a river, and I knew that the climactic event of the story would be a flood that put the family's lives in great danger. Victoria was played by Jenna Coleman, as in the TV series "Victoria".

A female narrator's voice was discussing the circumstances of the family's move and cited letters written by people who had called on the family at the house, which I saw alongside a scene of the family arriving at the house. In these letters apparently, everyone used initials to refer to the inhabitants, but it was clear from reading them that Victoria was well liked. Eventually, the focus shifted fully to the arrival scene, and Victoria started conversing with her sisters. Jenna Coleman as Victoria was extremely Jenna Coleman as Victoria, but the language was stereotypical Jane Austen.

The conversation among the sisters was light hearted until they came across their mother, who was on a side porch of the house examining a table and chairs there. (The house and the furniture, by the way, were uniformly wooden, ramshackle and coated in flaking white paint.) Victoria worried that it would be a hassle to move all this furniture inside when it rained, but her mother said the previous owners had told her that wouldn't be necessary—something about wrapping the furniture. The narration implied that this fact would be relevant during the climactic flood and that Victoria would devise some solution—possibly also involving wrapping the furniture. I woke up.

The dream is impossible in so many ways, despite being presented as a documentary. Victoria was an only child and didn't get along with her mother. What's more, she never left Europe, let alone moved into a run-down house on the Mississippi [:P] The premise of sisters and their mother moving into a smallish house does remind me of "Sense and Sensibility," which probably explains the Austenian language.

EDIT: I forgot Victoria did have her half-siblings Carl and Feodora. Still, Victoria had multiple sisters in my dream.

You know her name was Drina (Alexandrina) before she became Queen?
You know her L1 was German, and English was an L2 to her?
If you knew these in waking life, might you have not known them as a dreamer?

P.S. Thanks for reviving this thread!

Yes [B)] I paid attention during Episode 1, Season 1, of "Victoria".

No. I had wondered but never enough to look hard for an answer.

Maybe? In any case, I hardly ever doubt what happens in my dreams until I wake up.

When I was a younger kid, I think about 11 or so (I'm currently 14), there was this one dream that I've mostly forgotten.

I was at a huge fair at my school. It was much bigger than my actual school's grounds, probably spanning a square mile or so. I was running around with my friend, Kathleen, when I suddenly saw a shadowy figure. It should be worth noting that at this time in my life (and to this day, to a lesser day) I was terrified of red eyes. Absolutely terrified. This shadowy figure, hereby to be referred to as Steve, had large red eyes. If you've played Legend of Zelda, Steve looked similar to dark link - almost identical, as a matter of fact.

I ran from Steve all over the festival, when a man who's appearance I've now forgotten appeared. He told me he could hide me from Steve. I followed him, and he lead me to a filthy restroom filled with elderly anthropomorphic cats who were in the process of knitting. This is where it really starts to get weird. The old cat ladies took me in for what in my dream was 10 years, although it was more like a time skip or something with a few memories preserved. A (dark) gray out, if you will. Eventually I exited and, big shocker, Steve was gone. Well, Kathleen showed up. My subconscious is just as bad at character development than my conscious, it seems, because the now older Kathleen showed up and lead me into the hallway. My middle school had the hallways divided up into the 5th and 6th grade sections and the 7th and 8th grades. My 6th grade self had stepped foot in the hallway dedicated towards the older students maybe twice in my life - the doors remained a complete mystery.

The halls had a train track. A giant train track. It gets weirder yet, of course. Kathleen magically became pregnant (when I was 11 was actually when I learned I was into girls, but we won't mention that here [;)]), so I was on a train track with my pregnant friend. Just to tie it all off, the empty children (well, adults) featured in Dr. Who Revival S1 E9: The Empty Child appeared, surrounding us. Then my POV became 3rd person, and like a commercial break, I woke up.

That was probably the weirdest I remember enough to write about, there was one I barely remember featuring robotic spy birds, alternate universes, and a dash of magic I all but forgot.

I have a dream diary but Ive been neglecting it lately. Ive had at least one dream per night through all of last week, for example .... but the dreams didn't stand out from each other. The dream I had last night was a bit different, and I wish I remembered more of it, but ...

I was in a cafeteria of some sort and in addition to winning my meal (I dont remember how I "won" it), I got a cardboard box that contained a meal kit that would produce 27 liquid meal shakes of ~11g protein. It was just a bunch of tiny beads that I was supposed to pour into a glass with water until the beads were absorbed. I was worried about expiration since protein in bare form is not stable, but it said it was good until March 2021. There was one scene in the dream where I was having trouble fitting a handbag inside of another handbag, which is the sort of mundane event that occurs in a lot of my dreams and doesnt really contribute to the plot.

I've been neglecting mine, too; but even so, I'd recommend keeping one simply because you never know what bits can turn into a story or part of a world or even an entire world!

Last night I had a dream with some actual glossopoetic content. It took place within a much larger dreamscape involving a somewhat dystopic country where law and order and chaos had come to be assumed by various more or less criminal organisations. A kind of interesting balance between top level socialism and everyday capitalism where if the bottom level pays in and doesn't upset the apple cart too much the top level pretty much looks the other way. Still, inhuman as socialism always is. In this case a kind of turf war between The Busses, a conglomeration of transport concerns and the regional Police in their continual struggle for dominance on the roads and seeing who could stick their fingers into other conglomerates' business the further.

But anyway, the particular events took place in a house well known to me that we'd inherited. There were lots of little libraries and interesting nooks full of arcane artifacts all over the house. One of the libraries was full of language oriented books, many of which were ancient photocopies all about 4x6 inches in size (4 pages to a letter / A4 sheet) nicely bound in blue or manila cardboard. Some were by now quite old and in need of rebinding. Several were works in Thai. And there was one on the use of underlining in the texts of the early modern era of Hebrew (corresponding to the first half or so of the 21st century).

Of note was a large notebood, bound in the same blue cardstock, which contained an ongoing linguistics project consisting of a series of articles describing an invented language. It seems the purpose of the project was to make a complete language and describe it thoroughly. Though it was a pretty large project, I was only able to focus on a small part before having to go off to the next part. What caught my attention was the section on negation. In this language, negation acted verbally, conjugating (at least) for voice, agency, & volition. So, there was a kind of will/shall distinction set against the native or imposed capacity to will or to shall all within a framework of a spectrum of voices.

I can recall seeing an example, nefet, which would serve a passive-recipient-avolitional role. The example sentence was "This museum corridor is not to be walked." Another form was nept, but I don't recall the example sentence. The form ops I recall was active-agent-nonvolitional and the example sentence was "I wouldn't tell the boss".

ne- isn't the negative marker itself, that would be op. Various prefixes, suffixes, ablaut grades, and infixes allow it to be conjugated. I think the negative marker did not specifically conjugate for person, but perhaps that could be known from context. I think there may also have been some modal forms as well.

I dreamed I wrote something down in my dream diary.
But when I woke up I realized I don’t have a diary any more, and never wrote dreams in it when I did have one.

I’m pretty sure it’s because I’ve been following this thread, and at least one other like it on another board, for the last several days.

I dreamt that I was dreaming. I heard on the radio that Bob Dylan had died. I told someone else that I had heard on the radio a rumor that Bob passed away, and she told me it was true.

Then I had a false awakening. I was on a big boat. I had been sleeping in a hatch with cobwebs to my top right. I worried about getting the cobwebs on me, but saw that they were out of my reach. I wondered how I had been able to fall asleep with people talking.

The radio was still on. They had just finished playing a Dylan song, and then they played another song that I recognized as Dylan. I wondered if he really had passed away after all, since when a big star expires, the radio stations start playing a ton of his or her songs.

Didn't they write a song about that once? Something about Americans' pie?

There was water involved, but I don't recall anything about spiders.

Perhaps in some other reality it'll be you that writes the song!

I dreamt the other night that an alien abduction store was selling this meme and I was so confused I woke up.

(Alien abduction stores have nothing to do with aliens, by the way. They sell meme magnets and similar things.)

"But February made me shiver . . ."

Yep.

Although, in the song, it came as "bad news on the doorstep". Definitely not something Mr. McLean overheard, then confirmed with a friend that it was true.

I dreamt that a character from a horror game I used to play was trying to kidnap a young woman, and I and several friends from high school had to stop him from doing so. Some of my friends tried to stop him from kidnapping other people as well, while some of us felt that - while good to try to do that - it was much more important to keep him from kidnapping THAT person. For some reason, we also couldn't get law enforcement involved, so we couldn't just tell the police or someone in order to stop him.

Eventually we all got to just talking to him, telling him he couldn't kidnap that specific woman and we'd prefer if he didn't kidnap anyone. And he figured we'd be there a while since we seemed serious, so he started talking about his housemate, who was also a character in the horror game he was from.

I woke up at that point. He wasn't my particular favorite character or even my favorite killer from that game and I haven't played it in over a year, so I don't know why that dream happened. But it was definitely weird.

I had a language-related dream last night.

I was in high school and observing an awards ceremony. One student received an award for solving this complicated word problem but it was revealed he hadn't actually finished it. I took a look at the sheet, thinking maybe I could solve it. The assignment was to find, among the words of several sentences, the letters spelling out several words with the root "cren-" in them. "Crenellation" was the only one that came to my mind, but even if I couldn't find the letters in those sentences. I admitted it was too tough to solve and gave up.

Maybe you do it already, or know it by a different name? I differentiate ordinary dreams (like that conlanging dream I just mentioned), which I consider to be usually short, disconnected or even entirely discombobulated episodes, fragments really, from dream journeys which are much longer, more coherent, and often narrative in nature. Both can be weird. For me, in these longer dreams I often enter the World itself, where I can live in or explore or witness some place or event. I find they are coherent enough that they often end up as written stories. (And you've probably read a couple already.) I'm mulling over a couple now, one being the beginning of a Tana hero's story, how she takes up arms and begins her career, and how she has to destroy her brother first; the other is part of a hunting episode, through the deep snows in the mountains far to the west.

Sometimes a dream journey can reveal through the reality of the other world, something about this world. Twice I've travelled into the World and learned things that would happen *here* as they did *there*. Once I learned that one of my favourite cousins would have a boy child. She was suprised at the time, but in time, a boy child came her & her partner's way! The other time I travelled to the World, I learned a little about what my own sweetheart would be like. Turned out to be right!

I think these kinds happen more often than I realise, but usually it's just a de ja vu moment weeks, months, or years later, an "oh yeah, I've seen or done this before, cool" kind of moment; but on those occasions, there was definitely a "this is the way it's going to be" kind of feeling.

^This just makes me feel that my own dreams are so very mundane. But even then I can differentiate between a few dream types. One, the most common, that take place in familiar locations or what I recognize to be familiar locations (my house, my school, my vacation home, my grandparents' house, my neighborhood, etc.). Two, the type that take place in entirely fictional places, though sometimes I can recognize elements of inspiration from real places in them (the dream I posted about above was one of these. There were familiar people in it, but the location was barely defined and it was nothing I recognized). Three, the strangest type, a subset of dreams that all take place in the same fictional world. I couldn't even really describe to you what the fictional world is like. But there is a sense when I wake up of "oh, that was one of those dreams", one of those dreams connected to a series of other ones all set in the same fictional space. (One way I can prove the connection is that when I remember one of those dreams, I instantly begin to remember the others in the set. They're all connected in my memory. What exactly connects them I don't really know).

That sounds lovely! Unfortunately, I never dream that I'm actually stepping into the Lehola Galaxy. (Altjough I have had a few dreams wherein I read reviews others have written of the Kankonian language. In one review, I read that the word for "bar" (in its musical sense) was varoivu, when discussing how -oiv- was possible in Kankonian phonotactics. I woke up, discovered I didn't already have a word for bar, and made varoivu the official Kankonian word for it!)

--------------------------------------------

The way I see it, there are three types of dreams.

The most common by far are interactive dreams. About 90% of dreams are in the interactive category. In these dreams, you interact with the people, aliens, animals, machines, natural forces, and supernatural beings around you. (All lucid dreams probably fit into this category too.) You speak, listen, fight, embrace, kiss, flee, type, eat, drink, grab, and kill. You might run to escape a cop, or get embarrassed by a family member, or board the back of a pterodactyl to fight a Tyrannosaurus rex! You could even find the love of your life, or imagine eating a delicious place of penne, only to discover your mouth is full of saliva when you wake up! Some say that by speaking with the characters you meet in your interactive dreams after you've woken up, you can gain new insights about yourself.

The second type are introverted dreams. In introverted dreams, you walk along a landscape or inside a building, or possibly even stay in bed, but despite the scenic nature of your setting, what you see around you is not where the action is. Rather, you are thinking about something, and thinking intently of it. You could write a new song while pacing in an old museum, put together a political idea, or even let a new scientific theory crystallize in your mind! You might even come up with conworlding ideas. Although often the ideas you have in dreams turn out to be nonsense once you've woken up and have the perspective of waking consciousness, some thoughts from introverted dreams can give you lasting creative output once you've woken up.

The third type of dreams would be cinematic dreams. In these dreams, your attention is focused outwards, yet you don't interact with the outer world of your dream. Rather, you watch and listen to something happening -- just like watching a TV show or a movie. A mysterious voice from who-knows-where can dictate information or a story, while this omniscient narrator tells you what's going on, or you can watch characters themselves speaking and interacting with each other . . . yet you are interacting with them about as much as you interact with movie characters when watching a movie in real life. I had many cinematic dreams as a child, but seldom experience them as an adult.
