Re: Language practice thread
Ég er nokkuð viss um að kunnaną sé ekki rétta orðið. Heldur ætti það nóg að vera knēaną í fyrstu setningunni en witaną í hinni.
I'm quite sure that kunnaną is not the right word. Rather, it should probably be knēaną in the first sentence and witaną in the other one.
En samt er kannski hægt að kunnaną væri í lagi í fyrstu setningunni; ég veit ekki hvað þýðing eða notkun hafa breyst mikið á milli forngermönsku og nútíma mála.
But perhaps it's still possible that kunnaną would be all right in the first sentence; I don't know how much the meaning or usage have changed between Proto-Germanic and modern languages.

I believe you. I don't know how the descendant words work. (English generally only really makes usage of <know>, outside of some dialects.)

我猜想,也依赖知道古希腊语和日耳曼语。
I guess, and also rely on knowing Ancient Greek and the Germanic languages. (The ancient IE languages should be similar to each other, and the Germanic languages should collectively be similar to PG.)

Possibly. There could have been a Low German substratum that might've influenced it. It seems so, innit?
No tengo la menor idea si habría una palabra afin en alemán moderno.

Sabes, puede ser que tiene cognato con spuken 'encantar' (?!)
Y'know, it can be that it has a cognate with Modern German spuken 'to haunt'
Horne's Pennsylvania German Manual (p. 280)

*Gespukte = aparición => cazaría de gamusinos => inocentada, broma, burla = Gschpuchde
*Gespukte = haunting snipe hunt prank, joke, jape = Gschpuchde
Véase spøg 'chiste'.
