Dictionary check!

Post by Khemehekis »

I'm carrying over this tradition from the old board. We all post the last 10 or so entries that were added to the dictionaries of one of our conlangs.

Kankonian:

*ebrutu: on all sides
kiyeng: to grab by the heel
dekashakneri: apocalyptic
khanoidz: eschatonic
Abish Khanoidz: Big Crunch (lit. Eschatonic Collision)
bizirk: gender (of a noun), noun class
fletmos: gender-bender
tzuwoa: quinine
hamerm: to clam up
bwolwugesh: to look in the eye; to face up to (lit. eyes-stand)

An an idiom:

puvodiz ad vetshri: to have butterflies in the stomach (lit. "to turn to chutney")

Squirrels chase koi . . . chase squirrels

My Kankonian-English dictionary: 86,336 words and counting

I'm on it!
I've got:
doreen = forest
fewyr = woman
wyel = silence
cel = writing
elar = talk, speech
dlun / dluwyn = up / down
fye'ir = lineage
nagfer = leader
lar = meeting
agfeur = head

Pretty basic huh? Still in development :P

Welcome to the board! Yes, it does indeed look as if you are working on the basic words. Best to get all those covered before you add words like "hypohemia".

Here are my last Lurioneski words, numbers 760~770 (approx.):

ἁϝтιι - self (archaic)
ειδεcε - picture, image, photograph
рωтαιн - to turn, spin, twist (intrans.)
рωтοрειн - to turn, spin, twist (trans.)
тαррοιн - to be scared, frightened, startled
οрαрαιн - to jump
ἁπтιφε - cushion, pillow
ειοр - to cause, make
βрοφ - beard
xрεcмιнтε - coin

The latter is part of an idiom I came up with (my first, IIRC): "тιδιε xрεcмιнтε ἱ δακрεн" ('every coin has a backside'). Or, more vulgar: "тιδιι zωιc ἱ δακрεн" ('every animal has an arse').

Ooh, while we're at it, here are my last Hwong Zheng words (though with equal right they could be called my first Hwong Zheng words), in romanisation:

thwou - forest
kyeung - leader, king
reng - child
meng - boat
thing - to go
ley - at
thie - of
goung - to
pyong - 'into' (indicates result, e.g. "to hit someone into death" or "to paint something (into) yellow")
ong - and

Yeah, same question here, I guess.

What would be more interesting are descriptions of how you made these words, unless they're all taken out of thin air.

Well, here you go. Copy-pasted from my dictionary, which is rather unorganized and confuzzling. You'll find the word roots here to be... rather specific. Primarily because the declension system doesn't really look kindly upon derivatives. So "younger sibling" and "older sibling" are not related in the least (though there's actually a sort of cultural reason for that. Meh. Long story.) The words in brackets are the simplest forms of the most common uses of the root.

Elder sibling – d-n-w [donaw - "elder brother/sister"]
Younger sibling – s-m-y [somay - "younger brother/sister"]
Trick/practical joke (malevolent) – v-c-t [váct - "practical joke", Voct/Váctód- "trickster"]
Car/automobile – m-p-lzh [maplzh - "car"]
Demon (corrupted soul) – r-zh-(h) [rozh - "demon"]
Demon (fallen, corrupted angel) – r-zh-dzh [rozhdzh- "fallen angel"]
Crowd/mass/multitude (of sentient beings) – ’-g-r ['ogr - "crowd", 'Ogór Yet - "the Heavenly Host"]
Heaven – y-t-(h) [Yat - "Heaven"]
Vessel (in the sense of "victim of possession - demonic or otherwise") – z-z-b [zozb - "candidate for possession", zizb - "possessed person"]
To narrate/read aloud – ‘-y-v-ch - [an’eyvch/an’áheyvch- "narration", ‘oyvch/an’áheyvchód- "narrator", ‘eyvch - "he/she/it reads aloud"]
Edit: Substituted a string instrument for a French interjection.

Damn, I haven't kept track of the last ten entries. I'll have to go and invent some more to contribute to this thread.

As a matter of fact, there is. Kankonians do not have a taboo against placentophagy.

I was looking over the Kankonian dictionary, and saw the word for placenta (tzepba). It made me wonder if there were other placenta-related words in Kankonian. Then I remembered the pregnant celeb who's in the news and plans to eat her placenta.

Some other Kankonian verbs (not new, these have been in the dictionary for a long time):

semgum: to eat feces
edmes: to smear feces
hakhsapt: to throw feces

Well, I've listed the etymology for all of my derived or borrowed words. The rest are phonaesthetic, and the relationship of their sound to their meaning is pretty much self-explanatory.

Last 10? Uh... Probably these.

Code: Select all

ais- Noun stem heroic one, brave one
acas	   Active indicative	die
amócri Active indicative	caress, stroke, touch firmly but not roughly
anor-	  Noun stem	        blood
atéxyr Active indicative	say, respond (distinct from <apuos> 'talk, converse')
árus	   Active indicative	hear
ástar	  Active indicative	walk
irax Active indicative	love, feel kinship with, fond of (distinct from <cauxal> 'love, lust, desire')
mytét Active indicative	lie (down), recline
ourkas	 Active indicative	sleep
To derive them, I generated a word list in gen, picked some favourites, then generated another... Rinse and repeat.
I then randomly assigned meanings to them (which probably explains the bias towards the letter <a>).
