Good so far. Expanding it to include compound nouns other than professions, a search engine is not an engine. Oh and there are many animal species:
A guinea pig is not a pig.
A seahorse is not a horse.
A dragonfly is neither a dragon nor a fly.
A ladybird is neither a lady not a bird.

However, they are leguminous, and they do fit the non-botanical definition of a nut. They have a shell, and have a woody, bitter-tasting inside.teh_Foxx0rz wrote:I thought it was a pomegranate...

Naked mole rats are neither moles nor rats, and maybe you could even argue that they aren't "naked".

It's probably just a svecism, as the Swedish word is granatäpple, which literally means 'grenade-apple'.teh_Foxx0rz wrote:I thought it was a pomegranate...

pomegranate and grenade are cognate (by means of borrowing) - the weapon got its name from the fruit, really.Aszev wrote:It's probably just a svecism, as the Swedish word is granatäpple, which literally means 'grenade-apple'.teh_Foxx0rz wrote:I thought it was a pomegranate...

Re: Disk jockeys and tree surgeons
Interesting. I've heard of this, but I was sure it was some kind of folk etymology.etymonline.com wrote:grenade "small explosive shell," 1590s, from M.Fr. grenade "pomegranate," from O.Fr. pomegrenate (infl. by Sp. granada), so called because the many-seeded fruit suggested the powder-filled, fragmenting bomb, or from similarities of shape.
