:con: Kaıpó

Kaıpó does not have a morphological passive, and a clause is passivised by simply omitting the agent. The agent can be reintroduced through a quite roundabout strategy where the patient heads a relative clause which includes the agent and what happened to the very patient.
  • To ka ro tírı.
    SP car PST hit
I was hit by a car. (literally ‘I, who a car hit.’)
For comparison, ‘I was hit’ would be expressed as ‘Ro tírı to’.
  • Ka ro tírı to.
    car PST hit SP
    A car hit me.
Ka is borrowed from English and SP stands for the speaker pronoun.

This has been on here for some time, but it's wrong. You can't use 打つ utsu for being hit by a car. It sounds like the car punched you or something. The set phrase is 車にひかれる kuruma ni hikareru (be hit/run over by a car).

It should be:
車にひかれた。
Kuruma ni hikareta.
OMG, the kanji for this is amazing! 轢かれる hikareru (yes, I know no one would recognize it; indulge me). I also stumbled upon はねられる hanerareru in the dictionary, which has the slightly less-than-thrilling, old-news kanji 撥ねられる (you can, apparently, also render it 刎ねられる, which is neat-a-roono, but I think I'd limit that to its "being beheaded" sense). So:

車にはねられた。 :?:
Kuruma ni hanerareta.

In other news:

I was hit.

Or:
Karan xaleurit.
car=TOP PST-hit-ACT.PFV
A car hit something/someone.

Kannow adds agents back to passive sentences with incorporation:
Ptʼakʼaŗeckèłsʼ.
[ɸtʼɑkʼɑre̝ç̟ʷkʷeɬtsʼ]
ptʼa-kʼaŗ-ec-kèł-sʼ
INSTR-car-SENS.NRPST.MID-hit-1S.P.SG
I was hit by a car.

But:
Erkèłsʼest kʼaŗs.
[ɛʂʷkʷeɬtsʼest kʼɑrts]
er-kèł-sʼ-st kʼaŗ-s
SENS.NRPST-hit-C1.P.SG-C7.A.SG car-INDEF.SG

You can also say "I was hit", in two different ways, eckèłsʼ or eckèłow, but the second implies volition.

This would probably be expressed using an instrumental applicative in my current iteration of Vanga. A car cannot by itself decide to hit you.

[car]-INST-hit-1-PASS or something. Not sure what word I would actually use, but probably not hit, or at least the root translating into hit that comes into my mind right now. That word is probably restricted to fists or tools. I'll have to find another one.

Considering the nature of the language, tho, I can imagine some variation on drive being used and the word for car being omitted and understood, just like in the Swedish example given earlier in this thread.

:esp: Spanish

Spanish does it the same way as English:

Fui atropellado por un coche.
[fwi atɾopeˈjað̞o poɾ uŋ ˈkot͡ʃe]
fui atropell-ad-o-Ø por un-Ø coche-Ø
COP.1SG.PRET.IND run.over-PP-M-SG by ART.INDF-M.SG car-SG
I was hit by a car.

(That's if the speaker is male; if the speaker is female, it would be "atropellada", with the feminine ending -a.)

Un coche me atropelló.
[uŋ ˈkot͡ʃe me atɾopeˈjo]
un-Ø coche-Ø me atropell-ó

My transfixion by the kanji 轢 1¾ years ago (seen above) was well before Japoné語 was summoned into existence. At long last, a chance to use it. O frabjous day!

:lat: A curro latus sum(percussus sum). Currus me tulit(percussit).
I don't understand the choice of fero, but I used it too to make the difference evident.

The imperfectum here would mean something like "I was being hit by a car", which is supposedly not the meaning of the original sentence.
