What, you mean you never go back and feel that you didn't make something quite to your satisfaction and want to change it, or want to implement this neat new feature but have to alter part of what's already there?
Deyryck is not specifically meant to be spoken (using sound). The actual sounds used to speak deyryck I describe here are sounds chosen for human interactions. But they are merely directions. As long as the sounds are close enough to that direction and far enough from other directions to be understood, they're ok.
Well if it's not meant to be spoken using sound then what medium is it for? And why does all the stuff you've posted so far on phonology seem to be based around the human throat tract?

Ooooh I see! I didn't think it could be interpreted that way!
Well there's a lesson for you: phonological processes can happen even over word boundaries.

I don't create that way. I've never created things thinking "Hey that'd be cool in here!". It's more like I let the things that comes naturally in my head be the correct thing. Of course, I'm influenced by what I like, want, etc... But I don't (or rarely) purposely add stuffs. I'm having trouble finding my words to explain it correctly. xD

specifically. It's meant to be spoken using any kind of communication. In my conworld many species use this language and not all communicate through sounds and even those who do don't use it the same way. This language is supposed to be used as a template that adapt to one's way of talking.

Frislander wrote:Well there's a lesson for you: phonological processes can happen even over word boundaries.
Of course, that's not what I meant...

The priest wrote the king a letter.

The recipient of a ditransitive verb can appear in the oblique case with no preposition if it is definite, singular and of the noble gender. Lû roû "(to) the king" is an example of that in this sentence. If it didn't meet all three criteria, it would have to take the preposition a "to" and the accusative case.

To give to the emperor, the officiant wrote a letter.

Could use work.
There is a separate word for king, I just haven't invented it yet. The same goes for various priests and monks. Things like this currently break the grammar. Maybe Kwán should be used as an accusative marker.

Gosh this would be so good for Dz.. If I was doing it at the moment.

(Note: My lexicon is nearly nonexistent, and some of the word and/or forms below may be provisional. In addition, what I represent as a stress accent may be more of a pitch accent, i.e., indicating high pitch vs. low pitch.)

(I don’t know how to properly format glosses on the board, so I hope that the above is OK.)

Thank you! I have a general knowledge of the Leipzig Glossing Rules, but it's good to have them all in one place.

I was actually speaking less of the substance of the gloss itself, and more of the best way to format it in BBCode; I have seen different people on the board handle it in different ways.

Ahh, well, people do different things there.
What I do is:

Code: Select all

[b] <TEXT IN CONLANG>
[size=85] <TEXT IN CONLANG DIVIDED INTO MORPHEMES> [/b]
<MORPHEME-BY-MORPHEME GLOSS> [/size]
[i] <ENGLISH TEXT> [/i]

The god-master wrote a letter to the king/queen.

In theory the objects luvui and eghinien are interchangeable, but it makes more sense to have the "the letter" before "to the king".

:con: Faux-Phrygian
This sentence could be phrased a few different ways, given Faux-Phrygian's nonconfigurational syntax. The first translation aims to be as neutral as possible, with SOV word order and no definite marking. For the second sentence, I assumed it is part of an ongoing narrative and that the king and priest are old information; as a result, they get definite articles, and the letter comes first, giving it focus. You could also replace καρίταν "letter" with the Greek borrowing ἐφιστολάν.

Μάγος καρίταν καθιλαωόε ἔγριἑς.
Mágos karítan kathilauóe égrihes.
/ˈmagos kaˈritan katʰilaˈu̯ou̯e ˈegrihes/
priest-NOM letter-ACC king-DAT AOR-write-3S

The priest wrote the king a letter.

Καρίταν ὁ μάγος τι καθιλαωόε ἔγριἑς.
Karítan ho mágos ti kathilauóe égrihes.
/kaˈritan ho ˈmagos ti katʰilaˈu̯ou̯e ˈegrihes/
letter-ACC DEF.M.NOM priest-NOM DEF.M.DAT king-DAT AOR-write-3S

The priest wrote the king a letter.

I already had the vocabulary for this sentence (yay!), but here's a glossary anyway.
γρεήο (greḯo) v - to write (< PIE *gʰrey- "to smear, paint")
καθιλαώος (kathilaúos) nm - king, ruler (possibly from Pre-Greek substrate; thematic cognate to Ancient Greek βασιλεύς)
καρίς (karís) nf - letter; message; announcement, declaration (< PIE *ǵeh₂r- "to shout" with feminizing suffix)
μάγος (mágos) nm - priest (< Old Persian maguš)
