The only thing I've ever really loved was hurting you.

Post by Imralu »

This line from a Slipknot song has some nice ambiguity. (I mean, like, not, like, nice nice. Pretty unnice, actually - some may even say "very sad" - but the ambiguity is neiß!!!!)

:eng: The only thing I've ever really loved was hurting you.

:tan: Swahili

GERUND INTERPRETATION:

Jambo pekee nimelolipenda lilikuwa kukuumiza.
jambo peke-e ni-me-lo-li-pend(a) li-li-ku-w(a) ku-ku-umiz(a)
abstract.thing(CL5) uniqueness-GEN.3S 1S-PRF-CL5.REL-CL5-love CL5-PST-EXT-be INF/GER(CL15)-2S-hurt(TR)
The only thing I've ever really loved was hurting you. (ie. ... I loved the process of hurting you ... to hurt you).

PAST CONTINUOUS INTERPRETATION:

Jambo pekee nimelolipenda lilikuwa likikuumiza
jambo peke-e ni-me-lo-li-pend(a) li-li-ku-w(a) li-ki-ku-umiz(a)
abstract.thing(CL5) uniqueness-GEN.3S 1S-PRF-CL5.REL-CL5-love CL5-PST-EXT-be CL5-SITU-2S-hurt(TR)
The only thing I've ever really loved was hurting you. (ie. ... the thing I loved was in the process of hurting you).
(Neutral past continuous form.)

Jambo pekee nimelolipenda lilikuwa linakuumiza.
jambo peke-e ni-me-lo-li-pend(a) li-li-ku-w(a) li-na-ku-umiza
abstract.thing(CL5) uniqueness-GEN.3S 1S-PRF-CL5.REL-CL5-love CL5-PST-EXT-be CL5-PRES-2S-hurt(TR)
The only thing I've ever really loved was hurting you. (ie. ... the thing I loved was in the process of hurting you).
(Past continuous formed with present is more temporally vivid, maybe used in storytelling more to really "put" the listener "in" that time.)

I don't know how to do grey ... so, I guess it will be GREY...P!

The only thing I ever really loved, that is I hurt you.

Neither Yélian nor Caelian can express it the way English does as both languages lack an infinitive and a gerund. Yélian basically says "I only ever really loved it, that was when I hurt you", adding a temporal component. In Caelian, a special structure takes place that is only ever possible with the auxillary verb byanglis (here with its 3SG>3SG form byäis). Its object is basically an entire sentence: "The only thing that I ever really loved, that was the {I hurt you}."

New word for this challenge:

cīnuthemir - ever, of all times
Etymology: cīnu, locative distal plural demonstrative pronoun + themir, locative plural of thēm "time". Literally "at those times"
