The Snowball Game returns

Post by Khemehekis »

Phoenix-like from the ashes of the purge, it's back!

I started this game back in 2012 when a lot of you were expressing frustration at, or boredom with, creating words. You wanted to have a grammar as detailed and complete as, say, Siu,a's, without having to make thousands and thousands of words like Talossan or Kankonian or Arka or Itlani or Alurhsa.

For those who are new, or just need a refresher:

All the sentences will be written with only 625 (five to the fourth power!) nouns, action verbs, linking verbs and adjectives, plus the selection of common given names listed. That means you'll only have to create a maximum of 625-ish words (maybe a bit more if you split up the semantic space more) from these lexical classes as you develop your language. You could come up with equivalents for them all before you start this game, but if you run through them too fast you run the risk of relexing this list. (<---- Ooh! Tongue-twister!)

This list covers only content words; you're free to use whatever numbers, adverbs, adpositions, prefixes, suffixes, conjunctions, helping verbs, noun declensions, verb inflections, interjections, comparison markers, relatives, determiners, miscellaneous particles and pronouns you wish. Think of your sentences as like a mollusc: the nouns, proper names, action verbs, and adjectives are like the shell, and the function words, numbers and pronouns are like the soft part. Using "Alice", "feed", "green", "apple" and "goat", you can make "Alice was about to feed the greenest of her apples to that goat over there".

As I mentioned before, I've included some names. If you have a language that evolved on Earth, or an auxlang, or an altlang, you can have these evolve in their own way. If you have a language from another planet or a language that was isolated from Indo-European and Biblical names until recent times, you may either use these names unchanged, or adapt these to the current phonology of your conlang (the way Dave becomes Deebu in Japanese).

The words:

I've recalibrated the words to remove semantic distinctions not made in English, as well as many part-of-speech distinctions, since I found many players were ignoring them. So we still have 625, and since players were complaining about important, basic words that were missing, I added some new words, partly from suggestions (like "cabbage" and "toe"), and partly from filling it up with the most common content words. The net total of non-name content words remains at 625. I also increased the quota of names from 50 to 72, adding 11 new girls' names (Brittany, Carly, Ellie, Emma, Grace, Madison, Pam, Samantha, Sophie, Taylor, Vanessa) and 11 new boys' names (Adam, Ben, Ethan, Jeff, Nate, Rick, Ryan, Sam, Tyler, Will, Zach), so the total including the names has increased from 675 to 697.

How to play:

The first person creates a sentence from these words, and translates it into her/his conlang, with a gloss.

The next person translates that sentence into her/his own conlang, then adds a sentence or her/his own, also translated into her/his conlang.

Each person will translate all the previous sentences, and add one each time. The sentences should all be translated into that conlanger's own conlang, so the list of sentences (and workload) grows like a snowball.

For example:

Joey writes:
Komgithrian:
I painted the door purple.
Tumayafoy wa ludigavhiq phamist.
paint-RECENT.PST-1sg 1sg purple-MAS-OBL door-ACC
Then Sam writes:
Nharistani:
I painted the door purple.
Onhukhez shyhakh triphouzh.
purple-FEM.SG.DAT door-FEM.SG.ACC 1sg.MAS.PST.TELIC-paint

Becky made a coat of feathers for her father.
Beki dhutalhós khramel psistend.
Becky-FEM.SINGULAR.NOM father-3sg.FEM.GEN-MAS.SG.BEN coat-MAS.SG.ACC 3sg.FEM.PST.TELIC-make
Then Jacqlyn writes:

Gwapikiru:
I painted the door purple.
Ki ru pikawa si xuqwa 'upapi.
1sg PST paint DEF.ALIENABLE door purple

Becky made a coat of feathers for her father.
Ta Biki ru vuxu 'i'a kwi gwagwa rida davu vuqa
NAME Becky PST make BEN GEN.3sg.INALIENABLE father coat made.out.of feather

Jim was listening to music with his eyes closed.
Ta Jimu ra 'imu ra kwi kaku 'a'i 'uni mina qatiji.
NAME Jim PPART close ADJ GEN.3sg.INALIENABLE eyes IMPF hear music
And so on.

If Joey should participate in the snowballing a second time, he does not need to translate the sentences he's already done the first time he took a turn. He can just list the other three sentences in English, then add a new fourth sentence, with his translation in Komgithrian.

Tips on playing:

*Write sentences that are good at demonstrating some aspect of grammar, be it verb tense, cases, aktionsart, order of adjectives and nouns in certain situations, or whatever.
*Sentences that deal with aspects of grammar often overlooked in conlangers' grammars are good. Things such as object complements, oblique pronouns, polite order of pronouns, possessed actions ("John's playing the guitar at night made me wake up"), etc.
*Aim to create sentences that are different from the ones created before and demonstrate new grammatical phenomena. On the other hand, two similar sentences can help demonstrate subtle but important semantic differences (as with the famous pair of sentences "Ellen wants to marry a Norwegian", meaning "Ellen's partial to Norwegian guys", and "Ellen wants to marry a Norwegian", meaning "The fiancé of Ellen happens to be Norwegian").
*Most of all, have fun!

Let's begin.

1. Jim aparen palat, mui piva az palatenen bein en Kate.
Jim feel-PST tap_on_the_shoulder and girl REL tap_on_the_shoulder-PST-PST boy PST Kate
Jim felt a tap on his shoulder, and it was Kate.

A thing on saying "to steal" in Silvish:
Spoiler:
The Silvish verb meaning "to steal" (and "to fly") has two common forms that, as fate would have it, are pronounced the same in the infinitive: vela and vola (both [vəˈla]). The split occurred through analogy; some dialects remade the conjugation based on the forms where the root was stressed, giving vela, and others analogized based on forms where the root was unstressed, resulting in vola. As there has been more communication between speakers of different dialects, the two forms of the verb have spread into overlapping areas of the "Silvophonie", and many speakers actively use both conjugations. Compare the multiple pronunciations of "caramel" in English. Below are some forms showing the differences between the conjugations:

INF - vela [vəˈla] | vola [vəˈla]
1S.PRS - vêlou [ˈvɛː.lu] | veûlou [ˈvœː.lu]
2S.PRS - véla [ˈve.lə] | veùla [ˈvø.lə]
1S.FUT - velarê [ve.ləˈʁɛː] | volarê [vo.ləˈʁɛː]

No, you're not wrong.

chfuth = feel (as in, perceive through the sense of touch)

Duly noted and edited above. Thanks.

I also edited "metal stick" to "metal bar" way back in the beginning of these exercises, and while "bar" is listed as a place one sashays up to for an alcoholic beverage, I nabbed it from the straight alphabetical listing (which I use because I find personally find it much faster) in a sense of "'crowbar' 的 'bar'". Nonetheless, subsequent translators stuck with "stick". (Actually, I was hoping to find "'flagpole' 的 'pole' (as opposed to a capitalized native of Warsaw) which would have been the best, but it wasn't there.")

írdæca v. - to hate, disguise, dispise
Etymology: from írdæc "disgust"
There was a word for the snowball term "to hate" already (arasa), but I felt it's too harsh for the intended purpose - it's an inconvenience, not a deeply-ingrained hatred which would have justified "arasa".

Duly noted and edited above. Thanks.
You're welcome.
There has been some semantic "cheating" before -- one of the sentences in the first Snowball Game thread used "suck" in its vernacular sense of "be lame", even though the verb "to suck" appears on the word list only as an oral bodily dunction.

*14. As with Iyionaku's translation, the actual word "hate" is rather visceral and too strong for the purpose of this sentence, so I dialed it back with "dislike" (think Japanese 嫌い/kirai "dislike, hate" vs. 憎む/nikumu "hate, detest")

*15 No self-respecting Géarthçins in their right mind would repeat the same word that many times. It's just unseemly. That's what "thkai" is for, placed before the verb. It deals with "over and over", "repeatedly", and "V and V" (eg. "They talked and talked."). For giggles, I repeated the verb once, but you'd be clipped at the knees by your fourth grade Géarthnuns teacher for writing or speaking like that within earshot of the school.

*Etc.

At first I was going to go for one of Silvish's "only" strategies, but it became clear that wouldn't work since "but" is representing a lower extreme, rather than an upper one.
