Phrase Building

Post by masako »

So, much like the Lexicon Building Thread somebody who doesn't already have a phrase or sentence in their lang makes one and then gives a phrase/sentence for the next person.

Example:
the person before me wrote:Where are you going?
Kala:
모 다 야라 가
mo ta yala ka
[mo: ta: ja:la ka]
place 2sg go Q
Where are you going?

next: My mother and I are eating a spicy soup.

This is meant to help build grammar and maybe lexicons. The use of IPA and glossing is highly encouraged and the use of scripts is also welcome.

Note: Culturally specific phrases/sentences that may be considered difficult to translate can of course be approximated.

Would best like.P-1 meet.INF.TR and(PREPOSITION*) mother-DEF father-DEF and(POSTPOSITION*) DEP you-TR
I would like very much to meet your parents (lit. I would like best to meet the mother and father of you)

Next: Which way to the mourge?

* I have no idea how to gloss this thing/idea that’s in my head. The conjunction and, when used to mean many things are one group is represented by a preposition (a) everything in the group, then a postposition (alg) which are paired. When and is used in the temporal sense, another word is used.

1. My use of ≈ is an ad-hoc thing I use to denote that the -m- has irregularly undergone sharpening to -mp-.
2. The reason that the construction is passive is that the desiderative can only express a desire of the verb's grammatical subject.
3. The second -ˤ- of the desiderative is irregularly nasalised through analogy with the always nasalised former one and the fact that it is indeed regularly nasalised sometimes.

I don't have words for rubber so I'll do the green pen one (using eivpi 'carving tool' instead of pen):

gemba sỉlkumuednakimi eivpi mialha tavvi pila
[ˈɟɛmba ˈsi:kumʊɛʔtnɑɟimi ˈɛɪðbi ˈmɪalha ˈtʰɑw:i ˈpʰila]
gemba s-i-ỉlk-um-ue-dna-ki-mi eivpi-Ø mialha-Ø tavvi pila-Ø
preferably 2p.unag.sg-dit-present-obli-concl.infer.tr.opt-revers-1p.reci.sg-1p.ag.sg carving.tool-dat blue-dat than red-dat

‘I’d rather you get me the green carving tool rather than the red one’

Siwa has socalled multiple-agentivity in verbs. There can be an subject, some sort of auxiliary of need or obligation, an object to that auxiliary (i.e. it's subject as an object), and there must be the reversive infix -dna- (reversing on what argument the auxiliary/need lies).

I need to go - mak·um·i·mi (go·must·indic·1p)
I need you to go - sa·mak·um·adn·i·mi (1p·go·must·reversive·indic·1p)

This particular example is literally translated as:

'I would rather need you to present to me the blue/green carving tool than red'

Next (if you so chose):
I need you to show me the one you didn't take a bite out of
Siwa:

Sisyvvumadnakimi katurontủna
(lit. I need you to show to me from-unbitten-yours)

or

Sisyvvumadnakimi, iri aksuikona
(lit. I need you to show to me, which was not your-bitten out of)

or

Kahami isyvvotekina, iri aksuikona
(lit. I need that you show to me, which was not your-bitten out of)
