Animal Farm - The seven commandments

Post by Iyionaku »

:eng: English

Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.
Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend.
No animal shall wear clothes.
No animal shall sleep in a bed.
No animal shall drink alcohol.
No animal shall kill any other animal.
All animals are equal.
Wipe the glass. This is the usual way to start, even in the days, day and night, only a happy one.

Certainly the most iconic quote from that book! I plan to create another challenge with this sentence and the infamous last one of the book. However, I didn't want to create a challenge that's too long so nobody does it, and neither did I want to create multiple challenges on the same day because it might be considered spamming.

Notes
  • Very fittingly, Silvish expresses "none" of something with its word for "head (of livestock)". The exact word varies by dialect, so here I've used , which comes from Latin latus.
  • Silvish numbers are a bit confusing in that the words for "one", "two" and "four" decline for gender and case but "three" does not. Additionally, dou "two" causes the initial consonant of the following word to geminate, a common plural marker, but quatro "four" does not. It's all very fun.
New words
çheta/lâ/tetta (de) ind. det. - none (of) (respectively, < Lt. capita, PL of caput; < Lt. latus; < Lt. testa)
doua ppata nfc - biped (clipping of bettye doua ppata "two-footed animal")
quatra pata nfc - quadruped (clipping of bettye quatra pata "four-footed animal")
volérye/velérye nfc - bird, with focus on its having wings (< volâ/velâ "to fly")

Tadivam calat sahe padui, hillatiyas as.
Tadivam calat sahe paduai catura, aaye aabat pukschuai, mitrasatiyas as.
Mam merga vashakhat parjhatum shukaai.
Mam merga vashakhat drajhatum pujhure schayas.
Mam merga vashakhat dhatum madaya.
Mam merga vashakhat aruatum nowam merga yekhiilo.
Nowam mergai yekhillo pluhthan as.

Breakdown:

Tadivam [tad-ee-vam] = That Which. From Sanskrit “Tad” meaning “That” plus the word “Ivam” meaning “What/Which.”

Calat [cha-lat] = Walks. From Calatum meaning “to Walk.”

Sahe [sa-hay] = With.

Padui [pa-doo-ee] = pair of legs. From “Padua” meaning “Leg” plus -i suffix meaning “dual plural.” The dual plural makes the number “two” unneeded and redundant.

Hillatiyas [hee-la-tee-yas] = An Enemy. From “Hillan” meaning “Hostile.”Hillatiya+S, where the +S suffix is the infinitive article. Plus -tiya which is an agent suffix.

As [ahs] = is. Legal truncation of “Asat” meaning “is/are/am,” which is from the word “Asatum” meaning “to Be.”

Paduai [pa-doo-eye] = Legs. From “Padua” meaning “Leg” plus -ai suffix meaning “plural that is more than two.”

Catura [cha-too-rah] = The number Four.

Aaye [ah-yay] = Or.

Aabat [ah-bat] = have/has. From “Aabatum” meaning “to Have.”

Pukshuai [pook-shoo-eye] = Wings. From “Pukshua” meaning “Wing.” All body-parts in Humrayan end with the suffix -ua.

Mitrasatiyas [mee-trah-sah-tee-yas] = A Friend. I don't have enough time on my hands (read: attention span) to do all of them, so I just did the first two, which seemed the most interesting linguistically.

Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.

"If it goes using two legs, then it is an enemy."

Just wondered how these would be written if in Hebrew (and then in Greek) like the Ten Commandments.
