Did the verb root in PG include a *t?shimobaatar wrote: ↑02 Nov 2020 02:28 I've tried to summarize everything that's been established so far below. Please let me know if I should give some kind of hint.
"Word": teketting ef welledges
IPA: [təˈkʰɛtɨ̃ŋ əv ˈwɛɫˌʔɛd͡ʒəs]
teketting
- A noun phrase.
- The "Xing of Y-Zs", roughly, where X is a verb and Y and Z are nouns.
ef
- The first syllable is not descended from Proto-Germanic *ta.
- The suffix -ing is used to form gerunds/verbal nouns.
- The root of the verb is -ket(t)-, and its ancestor in Proto-Germanic began with *k.
- te- is a prefix. The primary reconstructed meaning of the Proto-Germanic prefix from which it is descended has more to do with a state of being than motion or location.
welledges
- Corresponds to "of" in English.
- A compound of two nouns, well and edges.
- The suffix -(e)s indicates plurality.
- The Proto-Germanic ancestor of edges began with a vowel.

The verb isn't *kutjana, is it?
If so, does the whole thing [i.e. the first word] mean "cutting apart" or "cutting to pieces" or the like?

Re: Guess the Word in Germanic Conlangs 2
It is. There's something more specific that I had in mind, but "cutting apart, cutting into pieces" also works, I'd say.
Re: Guess the Word in Germanic Conlangs 2
It's a long shot, I know, but someone has to try it: does the phrase mean "the cutting up of the edges of wells"?

Re: Guess the Word in Germanic Conlangs 2
edges is indeed equivalent in etymology and, generally, in meaning to English "edges", although in this context, "edges" wouldn't be my first choice as a translation. well and English "well", however, are false cognates.

Is it (=the first member of the compound noun) derived from Latin vallum?

Did the first member of the compound start with *w in PG?

Re: Guess the Word in Germanic Conlangs 2
Really wild guess, is the origin of the word that becomes *well *wadilã ‘ford’? If so does it refer to shorelines, making the entire phrase “teketting ef welledges” referring to continental drift, “the splitting of coast-lines”?

twice-broken meaning split is real nice (if that's what it means.)

Re: Guess the Word in Germanic Conlangs 2
Very interesting guess, though!
I'd recommend interpreting teketting as "cutting into pieces, ruining/destroying by cutting" rather than "cutting twice, cutting in two".jimydog000 wrote: ↑06 Nov 2020 17:04 twice-broken meaning split is real nice (if that's what it means.)
Re: Guess the Word in Germanic Conlangs 2
So many things it could be hmm. Does the *e in *well come from a front monophthong?

Did it come from a monophthong at all?

Was it a back non-low vowel?
