a cipher that takes as input any word, converts it to a binary number, and then converts it back to a word in a lazy way with lots of repeating sounds.

here's the names of the eight major planets:

Mercury: Piasiapapusopi
Venus: Pipisapipapapali
Earth: Sopimumipa
Mars: Misimapamu
Jupiter: Pamapupipatupipapapa
Saturn: Mimupipapiapila
Uranus: Sapapopipamati
Neptune: Lipapaposasipisi

the code is written in Visual Basic, but I want to get it to be platform-independent so I can put it on my website. There's also a small bug to do with leading zeroes that means for the time being I still have to retype the names by hand.

Oh yes..... I've had a website with a unique domain name (though constantly changing) for more than twenty years .... but sometime around 2007 i more or less went private with it, so I havent linked it from anywhere, and the front page is just a splash screen with no way to get to the content in the subdirectories.

It's old fashioned and it costs me money to do less than what most people do for free, but it sometimes comes in handy ... e.g. for a while I had an image in my sig that showed dynamic content, which is only possible with PHP, and I'm not sure the big webhosts like Google would allow that.

In fact part of my plan with the ciphers is to bring that image back, and have it display a weather forecast for some fictional location on a fictional planet, changing each time the user refreshes the page.

Sample: http://pabappa.com/pics/weather8.php It seems that this board's version of phpBB no longer allows me to display the image inline, but older versions did .... in fact the old version of the ZBB that was recently restored will forever display a rotating sample of Poswa and its translation, unless I decide to change my domain name yet again someday.

I've been asked by a group on Discord to design a website for them, and I admitted within seconds that I may not be up to the job, but so far it's been four months and they haven't bothered me about getting started yet, .... but I've posted bits and pieces of things like this, because even though they take their project very seriously, they might want a toy to play with too.

You sure do know a lot about computers (and their three-letter initialisms). Would you say computers are your special interest? That and conworlding.

Thanks.

Honestly though, I had to think about this response, and I'll say no. Computers change too much. I don't like things that shrink and slip out of my hands just as I'm learning to understand them. If we lived in a world where computer technology had plateaued and knowledge I gained thirty years ago would be just as good today, then maybe I'd consider that my main hobby and even be working in a computer-related field.

If I have a special interest outside the scope of this forum, ....and I mean a special interest as opposed to merely a hobby.... I'd say it's weather and climate. I just dont bring it up here because I don't do it the way people here all seem to do .... I'm a freestylist, so people who post map after map after map with the climate zones all perfectly placed merely bore me, as I'm basically looking at another Earth, and I find the real Earth far more interesting. I get a lot more out of playful projects where realism is optional .... maybe the geothermal heating of planet Kandə̀mi is barely measurable just like it is on Earth, or maybe it makes the planet's largest city 70 degrees warmer than the areas around it and has fluctuations that create a whole other type of weather forecasting.

I tried to develop the background for Town Speech, that West Germanic language with heavy influence from Japanese and Sinosphere cultures.

I might post my current ideas in "Conworlds & Concultures" later.
I prefer to not be referred to with masculine pronouns and nouns such as “he/him/his”.

The newest Kankonian word: moyanohi. It means "special ____ in one's life". It's made up of moyan (joy), ohos (soul), and -i (an adjective-forming suffix).

meya moyanohi ad is
person joy-soul-y to 1s
a special person in my life

mopigas moyanohi ad wan
woman-PL joy-soul-y to 3s

Well, I thought more about starting an Arculese thread, but then backed out again. So that's...that's a thing that happened. I just don't have enough material yet, but I'm working on it!

I'm doing a little more research into paleo-European languages which have been more of an influence on Arculese than on Lihmelinyan.

I'm also still adding more material to Lihmelinyan. Even though I have a second conlang now, I haven't abandoned my first.

I like the underlying concept a lot! Very Denê, that. Am going to steal, if you don't mind?

Moyanohi reminds me of mayonnaise, that special sauce in everyone's life. Any (conscious, unconscious or subconscious (or even superconscious or extraconscious)) inspiration there?

Nope. It's just a coincidence -- I decided I wanted to combine the words for "joy" and "soul". Although moyan was created to sound like the concept of joy, and ohos to sound like the concept of soul.

Ohos doesn't sound like soul to me, but moyan certainly sounds like could be the joyful cheer of spectators at the race when their favourite has just knocked his opponent's chariot into the Maw of the Beast, thus securing victory.

Been working on Vrkhazhian mythology a bit and have define the pantheon as such:
Aḳālu, sky goddess and mother of all
Sēdi, earth god and father of all
Mamû, creator and patron goddess of women
Nardi, creator and patron god of men

A rough creation story:
"Akalu and Sedi, were once embraced, dancing in the cosmic abyss. Sedi trips on a part of the abyss and stumbles backwards, separating from Akalu. As a result of their splitting, the moon deities Mamu and Nardi are born. Akalu and Sedi are overjoyed over the birth of their children.
Eventually, Mamu and Nardi themselves decide to have children. Mamu creates woman and Nardi creates man. They place their creations upon the body of Sedi."

A rough explanation of the origin of death:
"Mamu and Nardi have noticed that the humans are too numerous upon their father's body and that they could potentially kill him. Mamu and Nardi fight over what to do with their offspring. Nardi wants their children to die while Mamu does not want them to die.
With advice from their mother and father, Nardi makes a compromise that only their flesh will die and that he will place their souls among the night sky to be with them. Nardi then creates the birds so that they consume the flesh and carry the soul to them."

I also think I've made a breakthrough with my verbs:

I came up with regal titles:
ḳeb ḫapâli
"ruler of the universe"
ḳeb Warḫālali
"ruler of Vrkhazh"
ḳeb Aḳarḳâli
"ruler of Aqarqi"
ḳeb Ussâli
"ruler of Hussi"
reb/lumub daǧāli
"the man/woman of the wheats"

and -nyms:
ēsū (nations):
Ussûm "Hussi"
Warḫālum "Vrkhazh"
Aḳarḳûm"Aqarqi"

lumbū (people):
Ussâḫum "Hussite"
Warḫālāḫum "Vrkhazhian"
Aḳarḳâḫum "Aqarqite"

ḳebbili nimmaǧdali kīnumsinīn rannîm
"the king now calls you all to the palace"

I came up with a list of sound changes dealing with the weak consonants in Vrkhazhian, it is thus:
Spoiler:

Code: Select all

Progressive assimilation of vowels:
V₁.V₂ > V₂:
V:₁.V:₂ > V₂:
V:₁.V₂C > V₂:C

Regressive assimilation of vowels:
V:₁.V₂ > V₁:

Simple elision:
[h,ħ] > 0 /#_V.
[h,ħ] > 0 /#_V:.
[j,w,h,ħ] > 0 /V_#
[j,w,h,ħ] > 0 /C._V:
[j,w,h,ħ] > 0 /V._V
[j,w,h,ħ] > 0 /V:._V
[j,w,h,ħ] > 0 /V:._V:

Diphthongization:
[a]j > e: /_.C (root internally) (e.g. rayb-ū > rēb-ū)
[a]j > a: /_.C (morpheme boundary) (e.g. na-ynum-ū > nā-num-ū)
[i,u]j > i: /_.C
[a]w > u: /_.C (root internally)
[a]w > a: /_.C (morpheme boundary)
[i,u]w > u: /_.C

Root-internal diphthongization:
jV > i: /C._ (e.g. na-ryub-ū > na-rīb-ū)
wV > u: /C._
hV > a: /C._
ħV > e: /C._

Simple compensatory lengthening:
[h,ħ] > : /V_.C
Not sure what I am to do about:

Code: Select all

Vj.jV >
Vw.wV >
Vh.hV >
Vħ.ħV >
Especially for
a) root-internally (e.g. rayyub-um)
b) morpheme boundary (e.g. may-yand-um and ṣubuy-ya-um)

Also some verb-to-other derivation patterns:

Code: Select all

         C1aC2C2VC3- (verbal adjective)
C1aC2āC3- / C1aC2āC3 (agent noun/active gerund)
C1aC2īC3- / C1aC2īC3 (patient noun/passive gerund)
maC1C2VC3um / maC1C2VC3 (noun of associated object)
miC1C1aC2C3um / miC1C1aC2VC3 (noun of place)
C1iC2C3āsim / C1iC2C3ās (noun of quality)
C1aC2aC3C3îm / C1aC2aC3C3u (noun of action)
p-r-ḫ "to speak, to say"
parḫū "I spoke, I said"
paruḫtu "she spoke, she said"
parruḫ- "well-spoken, eloquent, spoken, aforementioned"
parāḫ- "speaker, orator"
parīḫ- "addressee, audience"
napruḫum "message"
nipparḫum "forum"
pirḫāsim "eloquence"
paraḫḫîm "speech act"

ṭ-m-t "to deliver, to bring, to bear, to provide"
ṭamtū "I delivered, I brought"
ṭamuttu "she delivered, she brought"
ṭammut- "delivered, brought"
ṭimāt- "deliverer, bearer"
ṭamīt- "recipient"
maṭmitum "news"
miṭṭamtum "mail center"
ṭimtāsim "persistence"
ṭamattîm "delivery, provision" (e.g. ṭamattu māruḫā "a delivery/provision of goods")
