README: The Translations Forum & Translation guidelines

Post by Aevas »

The translations forum is obviously for translations, but due to floodings etc. it’s been deemed necessary to put some restriction on what should be posted in this forum. Here are some guidelines for posting in the forum:

Refrain from posting one word translations, unless there is a specific reason behind it; for example if you want to know how people have coined this particular word in their conlangs. Often it is quite easy to find translations of single words elsewhere.

Do NOT just write a word or a phrase and leave it at that. Such threads will be locked or deleted, unless they are accompanied with a good reason why they exist in the first place.

• Posting the reason why you created your topic isn’t necessary, but it doesn’t hurt.

Provide glosses and preferrably also IPA or X-Sampa. An explanation of your translation might also be worthwhile.

Glosses should preferably use the Leipzig Glossing Rules. Using private or otherwise non-standardized glossing methods is discouraged.

Consider the amount of new topics you make. Making 3-4 topics is hardly a problem, but 20 similar topics from the same poster might be seen as flooding and/or spamming the forum.

Discussion is encouraged. How does this language handle this construction? What is the etymology of that? How did this construction develop in the first place?

• Remember that you do not have to keep all translations in one post. If there is a lot of text, just keep posting as if it were a regular discussion. Too many huge posts with almost the same content might make a topic slightly annoying to read.

Check if your translation has been made already. This is easily done with the search function.

• Unless very short and small translations, keep to a paucal amount of translations per post.

If you have thoughts, comments or reactions to this post, feel free to discuss it in the Everything Else forum.

A simple example:

:eng: This will be removed by a sad administrator.
:swe: Det här kommer bli borttaget av en ledsen administratör.
:fra: Cela va être effacé par un administrateur triste.

is BAD.

While something like:

:eng: This will not be removed by a sad administrator.

:swe: Det här kommer inte bli borttaget av en ledsen administratör.
[dɛ hæː ˈkʰɔ́mːɛɾ ˈíntɛ bli ˌbɔˈʈʰːɒ́ːgɛt ɒːv ɛnː ˈlɛ̀sːɛn ˌadministɾaˈtʰœ́ːɾ]
Det -här komm-er inte bli-Ø borttag-et av en ledsen-Ø administratör.
3.SG.N here come-PRES NEG become-INF remove-PRF.PCTP of INDF.ART sad-SG.C.INDF administrator

is GOOD.
