Re: Quick Diachronics Challenge
Your top-level groupings are correct! (Finally.)
Your vowels need fixing.
And like every. Single. Guess before you - you made the same mistake on the last syllable of the proto form!! *Confetti*
But 3 is not too shabby.
Fix the vowels and you'll get it.

Re: Quick Diachronics Challenge
What are you referring to? Considering all the guesses so far, there is nothing in common between the last syllables of all of them. Some have *k, while others have *q; some have it divided into 2 with a separate *j; and the vowels are all over the place.
Would there be an exotic consonant like *c͡q in the protoform?
Re: Quick Diachronics Challenge
To answer the last question first, no. If you're resorting to that, you are overthinking it.ɶʙ ɞʛ wrote: ↑13 May 2024 21:48 What are you referring to? When I say "last syllable," I'm referring to k, q, etc. and if there is a j, then that too. I apologize for the lack of clarity. The following were suggested:
qeo̯
kio
qʲo
qjo
kijʉ
kiao
kʲoː
kjō
qijo
What are some things they all have in common?

Re: Quick Diachronics Challenge
It is more complicated than that, and also we are overthinking it, and also we'll somehow get it if we analyse it more. Great... How it cannot be anything other than *otekio, *oteqio, *otekʲoː *oteqʷiə... is beyond me. Everyone's guess looks just as valid. I'm assuming the areal feature was between 2 and 3 having *ote > ʌti.
Re: Quick Diachronics Challenge
Maybe *otetkao or something, where we have either tk > k' > q or tk > c without a front vowel in the last syllable at first, instead just having a > e after c later on?
Re: Quick Diachronics Challenge
You finally fixed the problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The vowels aren't right, but you got rid of those jots!
But you have an extra consonant.
The last syllable
Firstly, thank you. Now I understand where I'm going wrong. I'm sorry about the vagueness.
Secondly, you have the general vowel shifts down, and yes, that is an areal shift. Not quite there yet, though.
Rankings:
Thief (your original was closer than your second guess) and Crey
Arayaz
Oebreq (I'd put you higher if not for the extra consonants [[EDIT: Consonant - singular; my bad]] and off vowels)
Jim and Flavia tie.
Kes (I'd put you much higher, but for the extra)
All your vowels are pretty mid, pun intended.

Thief:
We just got rid of the jots/jot-vowels in the final syllable. Don't put them back.
But the k is good.

Thief:
You're the closest anyone has got.
Some of your vowels vowels are too low.
There are no rounded front vowels.

I haven't yet. I think you probably will win, but it's only fair to give everyone a chance.

Re: Quick Diachronics Challenge
So nobody wants to throw another guess at mine?
That's totally ok, but I need confirmation, as it's still technically my turn and I haven't yet posted the answer.

Creyeditor got 1 segment correct and 1 segment close. TBPO got 2 of the subgroups right but there are no other higher order classifications here and none of the segments correct.
