Re: Laurel vs. Yanni

Here's a link with a slider that helps you hear both: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/05/16/upshot/audio-clip-yanny-laurel-debate.html Another factor that affects perception here, other than age, is the device used. A lot of people have reported differences when they try with different devi...

Re: Deriving new pronouns

What options are available to you depend on what other features the language may have. For example: Reduplication: If the language had or developed productive reduplication, you could easily end up with forms like 'mama', 'ʃaʃa', 'hawhaw', 'marumaru/maruru/mamaru', etc. Reduplication isn't always ne...

Re: Chinese-Japanese Creole mixed with some German

It's an interesting question. If Japan had not lost WW2, it's possible the Korean language may have gone mostly extinct because of their aggressive policies of cultural assimilation. Surely they would have instituted similar policies after annexing China. Their policies in Manchukuo were more relax...

Re: Chinese-Japanese Creole mixed with some German

If it's just for fun, then there's no reason not to go for it. If you're looking for some conworld/altworld ideas as to how such a creole could develop from a historical perspective, here are two: (1) If WWII had a different ending, Japan would be controlling a large part of China and Germany would ...

Re: Common sound changes that have resulted in non allophoni

/ɡ/ → /ŋ/ occurred in Yonaguni, which also underwent the change /k/ → /ɡ/, effectively distinguishing /ɡ/ from /ŋ/.

/ɲ/ → /ŋ/ occurs in many dialects of Canadian French (and /ɲ/ in French ultimately goes back to /ɡn/ and /niV/ in Latin).

Re: Why do Korean and Japanese seem to relex each other?

In any case, I think that if there are cognates, things like correspondences among the initial consonants should be fairly obvious. Say, Slavic languages' vocab is difficult to eyeball as belonging into the same family as English, but once you actually try to trace the sound changes, they are fairl...

Re: Why do Korean and Japanese seem to relex each other?

Well, there's the idea that Japanese was originally spoken in the Korean Peninsula. At the time, other languages, possibly related to Korean or Japanese, would have also been spoken in the area. It's possible that both Japanese and Silla Korean were influenced by these languages, but weren't influen...

It's an artist drawing from the anime 07-Ghost. I can't seem to find the original image, but it basically depicted the main character (Teito) holding up a skull to his head. Though the image is a lot more dark than the series itself.
