So, to summarize, double negatives are stigmatized in English because it's a non-prestige dialectal feature and is thus associated (in the minds of many native speakers of near-standard dialects) with the uneducated.
This has been a public service announcement.

Re: So Burushaski is apparently Indo-European...
Tocharian isn't especially "european", but it does have an undeniable "Indo-" character to it. Oh fuck, indo-european != european. Drop the etymological fallacy. I think Lambuzhao meant that Tocharian has less in common with the Indo-European branches that developed in Europe an...

My conpeople are plain old homo sapiens.

Re: Fastest way to build lexicon.
I’ve found this to work well for me, feel free to comment on it. First I will write a short Aesopy-fable or a dialog I want to be able to say. Then I go through and circle the words I have. Then I go through and try to see if there are any that fall into a category that could be derived. Then I con...

Re: Peoples' Names by Holly Ingraham
Maybe there's $300 inside the book (given that you know how to access it), and the $16 is how much the actual book costs. Then again, I could be spewing nonsense.
In all seriousness, though, I'm curious about the book. Maybe for a lower price, lol.

Re: Nifty Random Features
Also, can someone please point me to a natlang that has a seperate 3p pronoun for a mix of (anatomical) genders? I've found plenty that have a separate form for all-female, but not for female+male. Check out Das grammatische Raritätenkabinett's feature 57. Ah, thanks. [:)] Another cool feature is w...

Re: Who ACTUALLY has lots of words for snow?
English has a good amount of words for it. Only a few basic terms, though, I'd wager: snow, flurries, blizzard, (maybe) slush All the others I can think of are secondary meanings or transparent derivations: pack, powder, snowstorm, thundersnow ... etc. Why does no one ever remember graupel ??? It's...

Re: Nifty Random Features
Maybe someone's demonic conlang will, instead of alienable and inalienable possession, have exorcisable and inexorcisable possession. I was about to mention alienable/inalienable possession. :D This sounds brilliant. Dual plurals always caught my eye, although it was a while before I found out they...
