Re: What do you make of this?
I don't think he uses nearly enough exclamation points!!!!! ... Clearly a mere four exclamation points is inadequate. A sentence such as that deserves at least six!!!!!!! --gary I disagree!!!!!!!!!! I think that six isn't nearly enough!!!!!!!!!! How do we know he is to be taken seiously if he doesn...

I don't think he uses nearly enough exclamation points!!!!! Take this example: I stopped in horrors to find that, we human beings are so smart as to be able to reach the moon, there are scientists after scientists that invented things of all types in high technologies, yet, when it comes to language...

Re: The Laws of Magic in conworlds
... I was playing King's Quest 6, and there's a part where you paint on an upside-down U on a wall and enchant it to turn it into a door. It kinda takes away from the feeling of the story, which otherwise is very good. It seems like one of those super-spells that can just do anything and is therefo...

Re: 'take' > topic/focus marker
I've noticed before that English seems "reluctant" to coin truly new words, preferring instead to press an existing word into some additional new role. This tendency helps explain why English has so many words that are just way too overloaded with alternate meanings. The closest thing I've...

Re: word order problem, involving heavy use of coverbs.
<<<SNIP>>> here's my problem: the language doenst require you to mention the subject in each clause or even in the sentence, so if i used my current SVO structure, it would mean that the object of one coverb would be in the same place as the subject for the next clause would be. <<<SNIP>>> now that...

Thanks. Glad you like it. Feel free to use it any way you like. :-DCzwartek wrote: <<<SNIP>>>
I can see a lot of potential for a system like this! Do you mind if I use an idea like this (adapted to make it original) in my verbless lang? (when I finally get around to making it)

Re: Systematic Sensory Verbs
As an afterthought, "to speak/say/vocalize" can also be replaced with "my voice gave him my idea." = "I told him my idea." or "'Ouch!' his voice gave-involuntarily."

Systematic Sensory Verbs
Here's an idea for a systematic set of sensory verbs based on the concepts of "take", "have", "give". First, consider there to be SIX senses, sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch, and awareness of mental states. Next, let there be three verbs representing receipt, posses...

Re: Advice for Newbies
Quick questions ince we are going on about translating as good as texts are they are often "artificial" in the sense they do not mirror verbal speech, is tehre anyone who knows a huge wall of text which is one or multiple everyday discussions talks etc that can be used for translations? S...

Re: Advice for Newbies
<<<SNIP>>> Of course you can't start off with this. You need some basic phonology, grammar, and vocabulary. But I would say get into this as soon as possible. Not necessarily. I started my 30-day conlang with no grammar, no phonology and no vocabulary. I just started translating sentences one after...

Re: It's that time again! An anthro-centric "basic word list
An idea once occurred to me, which I've never actually tried, but thought might be an interesting way to generate a word list: In your own theater of mind imagine a small village of hunter-gathers living in a reasonably hospitable environment. Now imagine what conversations they might have. What do ...

Re: It's that time again! An anthro-centric "basic word list
I like word lists! I can never get enough of word lists. I have 47 skittly bazzillion word lists bookmarked already, and I still don't have enough of them. For one thing, I think comparing word lists is a good way to examine my own hidden assumptions about semantic categories. Thank you. :-D :-D :-D...

Re: The Laws of Magic in conworlds
I've always been surprised that so many people feel the need to define 'magic' in a world. Of course, I've never done anything with what people would call magic. For me, magic tends to be when a person's emotions somehow escape into the physical world. This never a controlled, intended or predicata...

Re: Afterlife
If a conworld is a computer simulation then "afterlife" is what you do while you're not playing the simulation. For example, if you're an EQ or WoW player then afterlife in the EQ or WoW world is your real life.

When are you going to start up again? I've been wondering that myself. :-D I've been kind of busy with real-life stuff, and I got a bunch of books for Christmas that I'm busy reading, but I may get back to it a little later. I'll have to go back and re-read the stuff from before so I can pick up wh...

Re: The Laws of Magic in conworlds
In Domhantir, there's not really a division between magical laws and non-magical laws. <<<SNIP loads of fascinating material>>> A very impressive system. I don't think I've every put that much thought into a magical system, even though I've designed quite a few of them. Another favorite approach of...

The Laws of Magic in conworlds
I've always been fascinated by conworlds were magic of one form or another actually works, but I want to keep the magic within "reason" so that the conworld doesn't become a chaotic mess of "anything can happen at any time." Thus the need for strict laws of magic clearly defining...

Thanks! I added those three categories to the list, with credit to you of course. :-D --gary I'm so honoured! Actually, I think my first category is the same as B4 in your list: An instance of the result of an action. a. to destroy -> destruction b. to draw -> drawing; picture c. to kill ...

Re: Changing nouns to adjectives, verbs to nouns etc.
Here's a list I came up with several years ago: http://fiziwig.com/conlang/functions.txt I was going to recommend that very list - though I could not remember the link. It's been very useful to me on several occasions. Everything I have on the web can be found from my main page: http://fiziwig.com/...
