Re: Two thoughts
Okay, maybe the chameleon illustration wasn't so good. But by "two thoughts at once," I mean, well, I guess just two trains of thought that can be totally different. Not two brains or anything, just the ability to handle two streams of information at once. Okay, so magic may not be such a...

Re: Grammar Millstones
My millstones are numerous mostly due to my ignorance , and hang around just like Jaws -- obviously, only minus the music. I am in a similar position, only my millstones have their own theme music! (They are calling it "rock-music", and won't believe me when I tell them it's been done bef...

Re: How would English speakers pronounce your conlang?
Speakers of English also versed in the sounds of Gaelic and Welsh should have no problem with most of it. Although, there are a few non-Anglic non-Celtic consonant clusters. Oh, it's hellish... I tried getting my friends to pronounce a few words; it was as comical as when my girlfriend first asked m...

Re: Mathematical Model for Conworlds
It's his conworld mixed up with a -- probably wrong -- detail form real world. He could use other figures as well. I make this a ''moral question'' because I'm aware of the fact that people want to manipulate other people for various reasons. Statistics is one means to do that. Another reason is th...

Re: Mathematical Model for Conworlds
Zelos! I have statistic for you!! This was gleaned from mathematicians studying at least US cities, I think. But they probably looked at cities worldwide. What they found was that if you look at one city, with a given size (area and population); then you look at another city, this time twice the si...

Re: Choices of Mathematical Base
Thanks! It looks quite usable. (At least to someone trained to do arithmetic in it through seven grades of school.) I see it as a base-sixty system. I can easily see it as having subbase three, and perhaps less easily as having subbase twelve. I can't see subbase four nor subbase thirteen. Your ear...

I'll get a picture up of the glyphs and post it on this thread if anyone is interested. :-) Do post! I'd like to see them. If you are still interested: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-hkcPCsiDT5A/TkCR_jy4ULI/AAAAAAAAAKo/jbmvPCzZzaM/s1024/Base60.JPG Does that work? I quite like it. Obviously. The...

Re: Choices of Mathematical Base
As I have said before here my people in my world all at some point use a variant of base eight. Recently though, a civilisation discovered the delights of base 60 for their arithmetical pleasure. This was after some time of it permeating the great thinkers and so on. They do use two sub-bases though...
Re: Iriex (I need help!)
Are there any phonological or morphological processes that drive lenition other than the vocative case? Lenition often occurs when a sound is found intervocalically. Honestly, I adopted the rule from my rudimentary Gaelic knowledge. I had intended to use lenition elsewhere but I'm unsure how to go ...

Loyalist with aspirations of becoming a filler. Or something. :-P :-D I have my one language. And there are the other ones I am using to fill out my world. As a result I haven't got much of any of them, but what I have, I like. :) Just now I am concentrating on numbers, and counting systems. To give...

Re: New conlanger, jumping in the deep end
Er...anyone care to say anything more about my attempt at forming words, etc? Maybe the IPA thing has gone a little off-topic... :-P Would it make sense, for instance, in a language where there is no masculine or feminine gender, to use adjectives to distinguish gender? That is, describing somethin...

Re: Through the Language Glass - Color and Space
Not a complete one, however, Iriex was first spoken by a species with monochromatic vision; they distinguish between shades of grey rather than colours. I'm not quite sure how this is going to work for the di- or trichromatically visioned species who have adopted the language. I'm thinking they may...

Re: Constories Thread
Yeah, 'tis a good tale, with much ''epicness''. I like it. And I wouldn't describe the narration as dry, but possibly just a bit loose and informal. Kind of underselling itself by being less epic than the story itself. You are right that it can be used to fill in for lack of an interesting subject m...

Re: A (semi-) new project
What do you mean, theme? Like the basic aesthetic I'm going for? If that's the case, then, well, something vaguely European, but not totally sticking to that basic pattern. The VSO is of course not going to, but I'll try to incorporate some things that I like. VSO is Celticy. Celticy is Europeany. ...

Re: Cussing, Curse Words, Dirty Language, etc. in your Conla
My language is supposed to be about God too, so I avoid using swear words. Well, from what I can see Christians swear, if not often. When they swear, they do it out of the earshot of young, impressionable people; and they REALLY mean it. By that I mean that the more often something is used, the wea...

Re: Cussing, Curse Words, Dirty Language, etc. in your Conla
I wouldn't say necessarily. I find that a guttaral growl or roar usually alleviates my anger far more than swearing would. And unless that counts as a word in their language, they do not need to be said to have swearwords. I myself do not swear and usually reserve my growl thing for computers, as p...

Re: Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
Speaking of which, the other day on my Canadian socials test there was a question "How did Louis Riel die?" One of the possible choices was "He was killed by the Canadian government." This answer is correct, although it threw me off because they used 'killed' instead of 'execute...
