Re: What would humanoid bugs use as mounts?

Fwiw, centipedes have excellent speed compared to most other arthropods. If the smartbugs could figure out a way to muzzle or tame them, it could lead to faster ground transportation.

Re: Beginner's Conundrum

I think you are doing just fine. It is a common, almost expected part of the language creation to adjust as you go along. You seem to have done a lot of base word gathering to build an initial framework, which will help set the direction of the sound of your language. As far as "am I doing this...

Re: How Do YOU Create Words?

I chose a few different languages as influences for my a priori conlang. To create a conword for a given meaning, I would look at the word for that meaning in those languages, choose two or more and start combining their sound and massaging it until it fit the word structure I chose for the conlang....

Re: Speedlang VIII (May 4, 5, 6)

High Fedrelar (now archaic, used more for naming) had stress on final syllable of nouns and on the penultimate syllable of verbs. (I avoided dealing with other parts of speech by trying to cut out adjectives and making all other parts of speech one syllable only.) The variation in prosody was one fa...

Re: Can someone help me learn grammar?

I'm not sure if this is quite what you are looking for, but http://www.zompist.com/kitgram.html has many factors to consider when developing a grammar for you conlang (and by extension, describes what different real world languages do).

And would their signdancers be accompanied by audible music? If so, instrument based communication is another route to consider, like signal drums, that could get someone's attention even if they are looking away.

Re: Euterpe: A world of sign language

I have a couple of thoughts as feedback. First, communication will always tend toward the comparatively easiest way. I speak with my mouth because it's much easier to do that than drop or put down whatever I am doing in order to sign. I see that your people can't easily vocalize, so that is a start ...

Re: Sharing space with other species

I think proximity to a homeworld would matter a lot. Who wants a race you don't really trust yet in easy stiking distance to your homeworl or capital planet? It would probably start out like "Here's the plane in space where our societies met. Every planet on our side is ours, every planet on yo...

Re: Question about languages in an 'unstable' conworld

It seems that although the Onlookers want to wipe out all the physical artifacts and infrastructure of civilisation, they don't necessarily want to wipe out humans, and for civs to keep arising, humans must survive. Those humans will tell stories to their descendants. I could see a strong oral tradi...

Re: Calendars (for Earth and for conworlds)

I have come up with a calendar that has seven months of seven weeks each, with feast weeks between the second and third months (feast of planting, around end of March, start of April), fifth and sixth months (feast of harvest, end of August, start of September), and after the seventh month (New Year...

Re: Which use can I give to my conlang

I have been drawn to it as an outlet for creativity. You want VOS word order, nobody can say otherwise. Custom vertical writing system, go right ahead. Everything about the language from the writing to the sounds to the grammar to the vocab is up to you. Complete control as far as you want to go wit...

Best coverage you're going to find for this type of question, even though the earth is 90 degrees from your rotation, with tongue in cheek humor to boot: https://what-if.xkcd.com/10/

Re: RIP cursive handwriting..

If I am not paying attention, I can switch back and forth mid-sentence. I tend to switch to print on words that start with strong downstrokes, like H or p, while words that start with curves, like q, c, or s are where I am more likely to switch to cursive. But I can write anything either way, so it'...

But ultimately, the best sounding ording in your conlang is the one you like best. Have fun with it whatever you decide. :-)

It would be insanity. An open marriage would be an absolute death wish. Fedrelar reproduction involves the husband and wife's entire bodies below the neck melding together for a time lasting from a few days to two weeks to a month, including a complete mixing of their bloodstreams. After this meldin...

Re: Ask me anything about the Azunans!

So Azunans have no concept at all of asylum, or at least none in practice? That is, if they broke off relations with a brutal foreign nation, citizens seeking refuge wouldn't be able to get a passport but would be deported back to that foreign nation?
