Re: Conworlders' religious influences on conworlds

Buddhism would be shocked that you consider it restricted to an ethnicity or culture...and would probably ask "Which?"
so would sikhism, jainism, baha'i... sure, they have cultural and aesthetic signs of their cultural origins, but like... so does christianity and islam.

Re: Softness and poeticity

of course the values you want are totally arbitrary, as many such things are, but the standard euro idea of what a poetic and soft language is going to is going to be plosive poor, voicing rich, and mostly CVC. also, take care to figure out the sequence of open and closed syllables you want, even ma...

Re: All About Musical Scales (and How to Tune Them)

boooiiiii am i gonna have a fun afternoon reading this. edit: indeed I did. just one addendum, from the very subjective and vibes-based perspective of someone who, besides being interested in this from a conworldological perspective, also enjoys playing music. For a real-world example: in Western mu...

Re: Music of the Tesazo

But the point is that in all these routes, musicians are arguing over whether and when it is acceptable to add notes. The idea of people sitting around arguing over which notes to not play isnt' one that really seems to make sense to me. It does to me. as an illustration, if you and me get together...

Re: Music of the Tesazo

You're most welcome: I'm all about conmusic being more of a thing. What I meant by tuning is like this thing about exactly how high or low your notes are: succinctly, we have all the 12 notes spaced evenly across the octave: like, the interval betwen C and Db is *exactly* the interval between A and ...

Re: Music of the Tesazo

Neato! I've long been thinking about getting into conmusic, but I've yet to come around to it. It's nice to see some popping up. this is, in a few ways, rather realistic in the sense of attested: I don't know that conflating form which note you start and the intervalic structure of a scale is very c...

Re: constructed counting systems?

oh, man, the youtube conlang sphere! misali's fun. you may mean bases. as in, base 10, base 12 <dozenal>, base 6 <sexymal>, base 1 <binary>, etcetera. I think most low integer bases have names: trinary, quaternary, quinary, etcetera. there are also non-positional ways to deal with numbers (which wer...

Re: Some notes on magic + culture in my setting. (Am I doing this right??)

Sal's right, but it could be that this is like a framework for a bunch of magic systems? such that specific systems of magic can instantiate the vague things in specificity so that, say, system A requires work in the sense of emotional work, the caster faces their own fears and, if successful, effec...

Re: (C&C) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

People go to live and farm in the mountains for all sorts of reasons: they're not as hard to live in as they look. no, really. you get used to climbing stairs, and the terraces once you build them are just there. even the most mountainous places are, well... earth! <or your conworld> in that they ha...

Re: Is English a logographic writing system?

English is not, functionally, logographic. It is closer to being so than other languages, but not even that much. While there are supposed to be rules for spelling and reasons for why cough dough sow whatever, I don't think those rules are real in the sense that speakers probably just know the seque...

Re: Romanization Aesthetics

I agree that there's no looking the best, and that there's much qualitativeness to what a romanization makes a conlang feel like. however, there is 'looking better' in some senses, pragmatically speaking at least. for example, at least for me Ŋali sæṇ mby øŋ ṣafu the subscript n and s look... well.....

I like it *though it'd be even cooler if the map was a hex-on-a-sphere, as opposed to a mercator. a few other ideas painting a world unto it, I felt the need to paint features instead of tiles: like, where my mind went was 'okay, where's the land button? it would be more intuitive a model where, say...
