Re: Fq, the worst language I've made
I think this actually might work with tremendous amount of agreement and with the coordinated and subordinated clauses alphabetising independently of main clauses. [B)] Maybe I'll just make it polysynthetic such that all sentences are single words. How about this, English with more agreement? The m...

Re: Fq, the worst language I've made
No syntax. The words of a sentence are arranged in alphabetical order. Surely "all words must be in alphabetical order" is technically syntax? :p It should prevent any valid phrase structure rules from existing, if I thought about this right. I also took the rampant ambiguity as a signal ...

Re: Fq, the worst language I've made
Lately I've been interested in the idea of a language being generated completely at random, but I think there are serious problems when it comes to a lot of features of syntax. I like seeing what the phonology generator and WALS feature generator come up with, but it seems like there's not really a ...

Re: Fq, the worst language I've made
Yep, it's horribly ambiguous. The roles and constituent structure you asked about cannot be determined from any sentence. That's what happens when you have no syntax! Alphabetical order was just the first way I came up with for that to be possible. My example "My new, round belly is not small.&...

Fq, the worst language I've made
Fq (= language) Inventory: The IPA values of the lowercase letters a through z. No phonotactics. All words are random strings of two phonemes. All sentences are uttered with no word boundaries, and this is reflected in the orthography. No morphology (completely isolating). No marking of semantic rol...

Re: what languages influence your conlangs?
WTL, with the initial goal of being easy, takes a lot from English. But then there's the isolating morphology which is inspired by Hawaiian, Chinese, and Vietnamese. There's also a bunch of loans from random languages.

Re: I have bought coffee and tea with milk - Ambiguity test
WTL was basically designed on the principle that there should be no (syntactic) ambiguity. I've found that circumpositions are a great way to get around stuff like this! 'Ai ge báya s yùlk, lat zhì wìlk zhìu sau . [ʔai gɛ ʽbaja s jʊlk lat ʒɪ wɪlk ʒɪu sau] 1SG.A PAST buy and.prep coffee, tea includin...

What do you like about it? I love its phonology, but the craziness in verbs throws me off.Avo wrote:Georgian, absolutely.

2a) I can conceive of no reason whatsoever for marking the verb with the case of any participant. Grammatical/syntactical/functional cases, such as Nominative or Absolutive, Accusative or Ergative, Dative or Dechticaetiative, and Genitive or Construct, really only tell you what Grammatical/syntacti...

Re: Conlang Class
Fourth update: November 7, 2012 This week we focused on making decisions regarding the language’s grammar. Some minor changes to phonology and orthography are as follows: • No word-initial consonant clusters are permitted. If affixation causes a word to begin with a consonant cluster, add a meaningl...

Palatals FTW: [ɲ c ɟ ç ʝ j] (I have a lot of trouble distinguishing [j] and [ʎ], though) Also [ɖ f s] and possibly my very favorite, [ɰ]. Favorite suprasegmental is probably nasalization (fun on fricatives!) I'm with the CVC people big time. The coolest Turkish words use it all over the place. Not v...

Re: Major Conlang Changes?
WTL underwent a pretty big overhaul about a year ago. Before the reform, phonotactics was very ill-defined, words' parts of speech were not apparent from their structure, and certain concepts like the passive voice were still used. Now there are four parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, and a ...

Endonyms and exonyms

This may also fit into the conworlds section for those who have cultural interaction between their peoples. The best ones are those with a large discrepanc...

Third update: October 31, 2012 This week we focused on writing systems. We showcased examples of the writing systems with which different participants are familiar: Latin (Turkish), Latin (Nahuatl, used to show how defects can arise from “importing” orthographies), Arabic, Chinese, Tibetan, Devanaga...

Second update: October 24, 2012 This week we focused on phonemic inventories. Then we discussed different kinds of contrasts that are made, chiefl...

Re: Conlang Class
As there are seven participants, you will have seven deviant opinions on how the conlang should be, besides your own. This is the most severe obstacle for a successful project. That's why I recommend to give some predefined guiding lines on how the conlang should look like. I agree, this is likely ...
