Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
I forgot about the Australian languages with their thorough dental/alveolar distinction. Thank you.

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
I know Basque has laminal and apical sibilants. As I was tooling around with my current conlang's phonology I ended up pronouncing two different sibilants. A dental/interdental sibilant and a whistly, kind of Matthew McConaughey-esque, apical alveolar sibilant. Is this ostensibly what Basque has? If...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
I just wanted a gut check on realism of the breadth and complexity of one of my morphemes, or rather CV-reduplication processes. In my as-of-yet unnamed conlang, I am utilizing initial CV- reduplication to indicate the following: On verbs, CV- reduplication indicates increased intensity, decreased c...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
Can a syllable timed language have long and short vowels? If so this would mean you have one length for the long and one for short vowels, which would approximate the way stress-time languages function right? Or is having fixed long and fixed short syllable length the middle-ground where moras live?...

It sounds plausible...not sure if its attested, but I'd be surprised if its not (and even if its not attested, that doesn't mean its implausible) so yours would be...lets say "yorik" means "singing"... C1: yorika, yorikaha a singer(s) singing. C7: elyorik, umyorik an instrument(...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
My current project has many noun classes. I want to have my class marking vary a bit with some noun classes being suffixes and some being prefixes. Is this possible? My justification for this was, during some sort of grammaticalization process, some elements which were more noun-like become one type...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
I'm working on some vaguely recollected information here so this could be wrong but if you say have a language with SOV word order and furthermore that language has a separate lexical class for adjectives then noun-like adjectives would precede the modified noun and verb-like adjectives may follow? ...

I believe I have seen Polish’s syllable-skeletons described as follows. Monosyllables: Maximally (C)(C)V(C)(C) Initial syllables: Maximally (C)(C)V(C) Final syllables: Maximally (C)V(C)(C) Internal syllables: Maximally (C)V(C) In other words: First syllables and only syllables can have onset cluste...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
Are there natural languages, or perhaps your own conlangs, that have separate phonotactics for monosyllables versus any other n-numbered syllables? I'm thinking of allowing for a less restricted coda for monosyllables but for any other words there are less consonants allowed to occur in coda positio...

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread
Yeah it definitely did. Instead of going by a gut feeling I should've crunched the numbers to figure that that was enough phonemic information to make that work.eldin raigmore wrote: ↑03 Dec 2018 03:48 (Useful information written by Eldin Raigmore)
Does that help answer the questions? I hope it did!

If one had let's say a vowel system with contours and phonemic length then if some vowel, /a˦˩/ has a falling tone while short and then its long counter part /aː˦˩/ does that mean that the phonemically long version just takes a slower tonal descent?
