Re: What are you listening to/watching?

Surely the explanation is just "the author was lazy and didn't put too much thought into it". Your first paragraph of explanation there seems to demonstrate that that's a pervasive trend within the the books, and the "studied creative writing" would seem to explain it. As someone who took a creativ...

 Waste of time, spelling reform. In stead of tilting at windmills, we should just reform English pronunciation . That would be far easier and solve all the listed problems at once! Yes. Now that , that is the right way. Why change the standard spelling, which everyone is using, to match a non...

Re: What are you listening to/watching?

I did the quiz thingy before checking what this is all about. I got Abnegation. But then I read that "Faction leaders want their members to think and act a certain way" and "The factions have conditioned their members to think and act a certain way" I immediately thought, nah. Too much like real li...

Divergent [:D] The real question is, which faction would you join? ;) Technically, if I understand the worldbuilding properly, all of us here would be divergents. But if I had to pretend I wasn't, maybe Amity? They don't figure in "Divergent", but they seem chill, at least relative to the other opt...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Has anyone made a new orthography for English, where, if you see a written word, its spelling always tells exactly how it's pronounced, and if you hear a word, its sounds always tell exactly how it's spelled? In other words, you don't have to memorize both spelling and pronunciation. If does have, ...

Did you never think to ask the barbarian whether they want to hack sth. to pieces? [:O] [:P]

I did enjoy puzzling out what each morpheme must be, though [:)]

Updating https://i.imgur.com/wOhuuyx.png Silvish The underlying grammar here has changed slightly. Like I explained in 2014 (Oh goodness, it's been six-and-a-half years [>_<] ), there are two past-tense options. There's the pasó kompozó [paˈso kɔ̃m.pəˈzo] , for events in the past few days, and there...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

There's also medieval Latin a(c)ciārium, derived from Classical aciēs, ending up as Old French acer ~ acier, modern acier, which could possibly count. At least it shows a phonetically evolved suffix rather than -aire. Do you think a single -c- aciārium would've produced as(i)er, with /z/, though? A...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Well, if there's evidence that the regular change was /kk/ > /s/, then of course that was the case. But the point remains that there's no reason why Pabappa should just assume that this would be the case [in French, obviously it was the case in Iberia] and ignore evidence to the contrary! Having sa...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Give examples of cases where Latin /kk/ becomes /s/. If the /ks/ examples are only reborrowings, it should be easy to find a horde of 'real' reflexes with /s/, or even doublets! I don't know about a horde (like Pabappa said, the phoneme distribution in Latin makes instances rare), but there are exa...

From a writing perspective? Speculative fiction. If the science behind the world is thematically significant, then maybe that can narrow to science fiction. But I hesitate to say "fantasy" if there's no supernatural element at all.

A bit of Ilóhra's verbal morphology clicked last night. The protolang had telicity coding that partly survives in the modern language, mainly with the telic perfect and the atelic perfect. I'm still figuring out telicity, so the distinction has been fuzzy for me, but then I noticed how it can work w...

One of my favorite sci-fi movies. I don't think I've fully appreciated the cinematography before. So well done. Characters opposing Ellie sometimes take positions that she should be able to counter easily, but the sense of wonder in the film is intoxicating.

This PHOIBLE client makes searching a bit easier. Unfortunately, you can't directly filter for aspiration, but +spread_glottis selects aspirated consonants, /h/, and breathy-voice segments. +spread_glottis;+consonantal;-periodic_glottal_source will select only aspirated consonants (and breathy-voic...
