Re: Deictic particles in Mayan

Split demonstrative phrases are the norm in Celtic languages as well, although there are distinct demonstrative pronouns for 'this' and 'that'. However the colloquial Welsh has become similar to the German in that the distinct demonstrative pronouns (hwn/hon/hwnnw/honno/hyn/hynnny) are more often re...

Coptic ⲙⲏⲣ (mēr) "desert" vs. French mer "sea"
Spoiler:
OEgp mrw *mūraw > *mēr > Copt mēr
PIE *mori > PIt *mari > Lat mare > Fr mer
Conversely, Egyptian dšrt "the Egyptian desert" and Pan-Euro desert- (Latinate in origin) are false cognates.

Re: Animal Farm - The seven commandments

Just wondered how these would be written if in Hebrew (and then in Greek) like the Ten Commandments.

Re: Are you happy to see me?

This sentence makes remarkably little sense in Rireinu culture since all Rireinukave are anatomically female (the males of the species are non-sapient so are tacitly ignored) so the subtext is completely lost. Maybe a more gender-neutral one would be something like "do you have a fever", ...

Re: The Status of Dene-Caucasian and Dene-Yeniseian

Is Dene-Yeniseian no longer accepted? Did something happen? I don't know the general opinion, but I haven't found much written on the topic apart from Vajda's tbh. I've read his thesis myself and I can't say I read very compelling evidence. It was rather disappointing how little detail there was ac...

Re: Celto-Nordic Conlang

I imagine you'll want to take inspiration from Scottish Gaelic and Manx since they both developed in areas of Norse influence ( the Hebrides and the Isle of Man were both under Norse control for some time ), but that influence is still somewhat limited by time. Also I always saw Icelandic and Faroes...

as does Cornish (I think Breton too maybe?), and Scottish Gaelic. Irish still generally prefers simplex verbs to periphrasis ( oibrím ); a present progressive construction can be used, but it's not very common AFAIK: tá mé ag obair be.PRS 1SG CONN work.VN This greatly surprises me! Re: Peripheral Euro features

This is a pretty interesting challenge. One thing that I think is peripheral regarding verbs is the use of a periphrastic construction involving a non-finite verb form to express progressive/continuous aspect in the standard language, in an unmarked way, practically as part of the verb paradigm. Fr...

Re: Any well-designed conlang with strong East Asian features??

Salmoneus, I’ve been trying to remember the name of a conlang that was quite prominent on the ZBB many many moons ago, but I’ve been unable to find it. It was modelled on Japanese and had a similar syllable structure (except it allowed CwV syllables iirc). The reason I though to ask if you might re...

I am but dust and ashes

Rabbi Simcha Bunam of Pzhysha once said, "Everyone must have two pockets, so that he can reach into one or the other, according to his needs. In his right pocket are to be the words: 'For my sake was the world created', and in his left: 'I am but dust and ashes'." These words refer to a st...
