Re: False cognates

Correct thread this time! Has this one been posted already?

English rest 'to relax', from PIE *res- 'to rest'
English rest 'remainder', from Latin re- + PIE *steh2- 'to stand'

Ábḫanni: an etymology ('vision')

Instead of trying to write out grammatical stuff which will inevitably change, I think I'll just have fun working out some etymologies. This post will be the etymology of just one word, zéja ; future posts will have etymologies for more words derived from the proto-language root considered here. Ety...

Re: pö’ li’

I am going to be watching this. Is Tibetan an inspiration? Glad you like it! I don't really have any specific influences other than keeping the Oceanic/Polynesian languages in the back of my mind (specifically, the sometimes-wierd phonologies of the former and the isolating nature of the latter). I...

I've been making lots of progress on Ábḫanni but also continuously overhauling it. Because it's become such a massive project (trying to create the language while evolving it through four earlier forms, and also trying to think about conworld stuff, which I always suck at), I thought it would be a g...

Re: Conlang word easter eggs?

The Ábḫanni word for 'cat', habái [ɦɐˈβáɪ̯], I got from putting my cat's name (as close as the phonology could allow) into my protolanguage and evolving it. I doubt anyone could guess what his name is lol. (And it's further complicated by the fact that the Ábḫanni word isn't a direct phonological de...

Re: Ȧbhannı

Ope it's... verb time again? Verb morphology time again??? The strong stem Aight, here's our proto-Ábḫanni root: *gǝ́sa 'to fall' (changed from the old *fǝ́sa ). Evolving this root as is, we get ḫáza , which is the "strong" stem for the modern Ábḫanni word. The strong stem comes into play ...

Re: Does anyone else try and actually speak or pronounce their conlang or is it all on paper?

About two thirds of conlanging, for me, it seems, is muttering to myself while playing around with strings of phonemes until I get them just right...

Re: Ȧbhannı

This isn't really a big post, but I had a go at developing the Ábḫanni pronouns just now and I think it turned out rather nice. Ábḫanni just has first, second, and third persons, but the third person (and hence all the pronouns) is used for human referents, so determiners are used as non-human third...

Re: Ȧbhannı

It's been quite a while since I've posted but I've still been regularly thinking about and working on Ábḫanni when I have time. So in this post I'm going to talk about the revisions to the verbal system I've made. —————— There are now six (main) aspects: perfective, progressive, imperfective, habitu...

Re: Language practice thread

C'est une deuxième langue populaire. It's a popular second language. Perso, j'utilise le français parce que c'est la seule langue autre que l'anglais que je parle. Personally, I use French because it's the only not-English language I speak. Moi aussi. Avant de faire du français je voulais faire un ...

Re: Language practice thread

Il me semble que beaucoup de gens savent le français ici. It seems like a lot of people here know French. C'est mon troisième semestre du français mais je ne suis pas aussi compétent avec ça que je veux. I'm on my third semester of French but I'm definitely not as competent with it as much as I'd l...

Re: Ȧbhannı

I figured out, for the most part, the phonological development of Ábḫanni, which should span at least a thousand years. Unlike in some of my older posts I'm not really interested in the older forms of Ábḫanni but am simply developing the history in order to be able to have realistic and interesting ...

Re: Ȧbhannı

I'm sorry. I'm again fucking with terms. I think that what you call "perfective" is actually "perfect". In linguistics they are two different things, although in Romance languages they are expressed with the same form. Perfect can also be called "retrospectative" if yo...

Ábhanni

Well, it's been a while. I haven't done a whole lot of conlanging since I was last here but I have some motivation to get back into it. I have a lot of material on Ábhanni (plus a little bit of orthography change lol) but most of it is scattered across many different revisions that didn't get very f...

Blech, ok I'm starting over again. Well, I'm keeping most of what I did since the first restart but overhauling it quite a bit. Not so much a restart as simply reorienting myself. But first I'd like some advice from you guys on how most efficiently to make my grammar. The way I've been doing it sinc...
