Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
Anybody know of software or a website that allows you to very quickly enter arbitrary unicode characters? What I'm imagining is a site where there's an onscreen keyboard and a text box. When you click on any of the keys on the onscreen keyboard, it brings up a menu of unicode characters to choose f...

Some thoughts on the evolution of planetary systems
I wish to discuss some thoughts on the evolution of planetary systems here. As you know, there are planetary systems that are unlike ours: "hot Jupiters", "super-Earths" and the like. Indeed, there are more of those known than systems like our solar system, because they are easie...

Re: Random ideas: Morphosyntax
German has lots of quasi-minimal pairs where stress is either on the (directional) prefix or on the root and this changes the semantics. Here is an example (with stress marked by an acute accent.): um-fáhren around-drive 'to drive around s.o.' úm-fahren around-drive 'to knock s.o. over while drivin...

Re: Random Conworld idea thread
What is sword and planet? A science fiction or fantasy subgenre, now out of fashion, about adventures on an alien planet with a low-tech society, such as the Barsoom novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs. I think I've heard it called "planetary romance" or at least that's what TV Tropes calls it...

Re: Languages with interesting phonotactics
Semitic? Ehhh... I guess with the ablaut and pharyngeals? It doesn't really make sense to me geographically speaking. Grammatically speaking - ehhhhhn, I guess? But you might as well chalk it up to somewhere else. Of course, I am not sure about that. There are some lexical resemblances between IE a...

Re: Languages with interesting phonotactics
I have a feeling I'm kicking a hornets' nest, but does this cast doubt on common views of Indo-European? (In other words a regular Tuesday, but still.) PIE phonotactics doesn't feel very weird to me, but that may just be due to the fact that my native language and most of the languages I am familia...

The jargons of ham radio and the Internet
I am sure lurker can answer my question: How much ham radio jargon has spilled over into Internet jargon? I know hardly anything about ham radio jargon, beyond such items as callsign or QSO , which I am not familiar with from Internet jargon, but how much Internet jargon originates in the ham radio ...

No, I meant a catgirl. The <r> was a typo; I'll correct it.Khemehekis wrote: ↑12 Oct 2024 00:24 What's the meaning of the screenname "bimbjybern"?
Also, @WeepingElf: A cartgirl? Like Molly Malone?

Re: Fear and Loathing in the Evancyan Imperium
A planet of that size should be a gas giant and have no humanoid inhabitants. But perhaps I am just tooting the wrong horn and entice God to kill another cartgirl. Don't worry, the science will get much worse than this! [:D] It's just for fun, I've never cared to make any science behind it realisti...

Why is 'sword' animate, but 'warrior' inanimate? Especially the latter puzzles me.

I have a degree in linguistics and Latin (ancient languages and historical linguistics were my focus while in college), but I’ve been conlanging since I was 11. It was studying Latin in middle school that largely got me interested in creating my own language, and it was conlanging and language lear...

Re: Underwater vocalization
There is this awesome underwater music. Apparently, it is possible to sing underwater without blowing bubbles! This technique, whichever way it works, could perhaps be used to talk underwater as well.
