Re: Usani Language and Scratchpad

-/x~x/ is supposed to be free variation between the voiceless velar fricative and the voiceless uvular fricative, but it didn't show up that way, for some reason. The realization of this phoneme varies depending on the individual speaker. The CBB ─ all PHPBBs, for that matter ─ display the voiceles...

Usani Language and Scratchpad

Usani is my latest conlanging project so far, and one that I am content with the direction it is heading in. Usani's phonology isn't super complicated. At most, a syllable can be either CVV or CVC. However, the coda is limited to a handful of consonants, although I might change that, later. Here are...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

So, I read somewhere that Persian has the vowels /æ ɒː e i oː uː/. Why are some of them long and some short? Most languages that have phonemic vowel length tend to have them come in pairs like /a aː i iː u uː/, while in Persian, it seems that back vowels are long, and front ones are short. Are there...

Re: Conlang word easter eggs?

I have one word I keep tossing into my various projects: /kaine/, which is the color white. It's a reference to a character named Kaine from the Nier games, who has white hair and a white dress.

How unusual would it be for a language to have phonemic breathy voiced stops, but no regular voiced nor aspirated stops?

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

So, does the morphological typology of a language and the complexity of tone melodies show any correlation?

Like, is an analytic language more like to just have HL and LH, while an agglutinative language has LHL?

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

How weird would it be for a language with split-ergativity to encode grammatical aspect in the verb, but uses the ergativity split for some other criteria than aspect? Like the split is based on animacy, for instance? An animacy-based split is I think more common than an aspect-based one. Is that s...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

[ka˥.na˥] [ka˩.na˩] [ka.na] Those are the underlying tone melodies for each of them. The third one, however, can be rising, falling or low depending on the adjacent morphemes. That suggests that you have marked H and L tones, and then a separate unmarked tone. Which is perfectly naturalistic. I see...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Well, in the case of my conlang, toneless words are realized as low toned in isolation, but only words with a low tone melody, toneless words have different realizations depending on the adjacent tones of other words. In this case, would the low tone still be considered unmarked? I have been ponder...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

So, if a language has a simple tone system (let's say just high and low), would there be a difference between a low tone melody and a toneless melody? Well, it depends on the language. Usually speaking, if a language has a fairly uncomplicated binary low/high tone distinction, low tone is unmarked....

Like, the word /ka.na/ has a Low tone melody, but /ka.na/ is atonal, but takes the tone of whatever word it attaches to?

So, on the page for Polysynthesis, Wikipedia lists two types of polysynthetic languages: affixal and compositional.

How accurate is this? Is there any overlap between the two in natlangs?

Okay, I have another question, this time about pitch accent. Can a pitch accent language exhibit tone sandhi and assimilation like tone plateaus, or Meeusen's rule? In the case of my conlang, contour tones occur, but are restricted to heavy syllables, and are analyzed as a sequence of a high tone an...

I like the Mongol script. It's one of the few vertical scripts still around.

I've also always like Arabic, as well.

How unusual would it be for a language to have /ʃ t͡ʃ/ as phonemes but [ɕ cç] as allophones of /s k/ before /i/?

Are they too similar to tell apart?

Re: Which conlangs are you working on and/or still plan to work on?

My main project is Narai. It's not super interesting with it's phonology as it doesn't have any complex phonotactics nor any rare phonemes, but I still like it aesthetically. The most unusual thing about it's phonology is that it has /y/ as the only front rounded vowel in what's otherwise a standard...
