Re: asking again on Old Japanese/Proto-Japonic resources
I know this thread is a bit old now, but have you read Bjarke Frellesvig's A History of the Japanese Language ? It has a little bit of everything in it from Proto-Japanese up to modern times. Here's a link to download the pdf, but if you want it more directly I can try to do that for you. http://gen...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
You're probably the first one i heard that does has that change in the US. It's definitely not a common thing where I'm from (Ohio), since I've gotten shit from people for saying "one two free ..." before. Like I said, I'm going to have to listen in on the speech of people around me for t...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
I've exhibited θ-fronting ever since I was a little kid in casual speech, yet I never front /ð/ > /v/. Why is this? Like I'll say things like: free : three [fɹiː] feeder : theater [fiɾɚ] think [fɪŋk] eighth : [eɪf] But the following sound awful to me and a lot more obviously "incorrect" in...

Re: Last word you learned in a foreign language
Here's some interesting Basque derivation:
Balitz "if he/she/it were..."
and derived from that with the adnominal -ko suffix
Balizko "Hypothetical"
Balizko olak burdinarik ez "A hypothetical forge doesn't (produce) any iron." (proverb)
Interesting!

I'll believe it when I see someone lay out the sound correspondences and not just vaguely similar-sounding words.

Re: Wacky theory on Basque.
Ideally I would have had a better corpus to choose from, [...] I think this is quite the good corpus so that one can see that these two are likely not related. Multiple words in your list are found in the Swadesh list as well which are lemmas that don't get replaced as often as others. The numbers ...

Re: Wacky theory on Basque.
Although I totally agree on your general statement - Basque and Etruscan are not related - I find it really dubious to try and prove that with a seemingly random list of words. With the same method, one could try to prove that German and English are not related: No, one could not. I went through yo...

Re: Wacky theory on Basque.
I know I'm sorta necroing this thread, but I thought it'd be interesting to do a small comparison of some basic Etruscan and Basque vocabulary. I know this has probably been done before but I'll just do it myself for the fun of it and see what results I get. Most of the Etruscan inscriptions in my b...

Euskal Herrira joan nahi dut, baina hara joan baino lehen, nik hizkuntza eder hau ikasi beharko dut. ...

Re: Does anybody else get bored of conworlds easily?
Maybe not bored, but frustrated. I tend to be a perfectionist, so it tends to hamper my progress. Same with my conlanging, causing all of my character's names to be mainly placeholders. It's very frustrating and I get little done

[:'(] [:'(] [:'(] [:'(...

Re: (C&C) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
I actually see no reason whatsoever why animal sacrifice with ritual meat meal would disappear. It is a very modern, Christian, mode of thought that you're rooted in there! Nothing wrong with that, but, as you say it can cloud the judgement when it comes to considering some other possibilities. It ...

Re: (C&C) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
I suspect that some degree of sacrifices would still occur, but I don't think full on animal sacrifice will continue. Then again, we're tainted with a Eurocentric bias. So I can't determine for certain. That is sort of what I was thinking. I was thinking that traditions such as votive offerings cou...

Re: (C&C) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
In the conworld I've begun to work on recently, my pseudo-Europe analogue has never encountered anything comparable to Christianity, so the main religion of the people (to misrepresent their beliefs as a monolith) is polytheistic. One of the common practices of the ancient religion was animal sacrif...

I know this question may be impossible to answer, but I have a question concerning a merger in my own speech. I have a universal merger of /θ/ with /f/ in my speech, so I have /fɹi/ for both "three" and "free", also "theater" and "feeder" are homophones for me...

I'm currently designing a case system for my language and has the cases (among others) of ablative, instrumental and ergative. Below is a summary of their functions: Ablative: Motion from, time since Ergative: Agent of a transitive verb Instrumental: Means by which an activity is carried out, (maybe...

(TONS OF HELPFUL TEXT AND LINKS) what I have said sound abstract, maybe I should draw you a climate map? Thanks as well to you for the links and information, it seems very helpful to what I am trying to do. Not that you are obligated at all, but if you did decide to draw up a basic map for illustra...
