Re: Clothing and Clothing Inspiration for Concultures

Isn't there also a lot of variation on Earth when it comes to clothing (apart from the satus symbol thing)? I'm not sure who this is specifically responding to, but I don't think anyone implied that Earth clothing is lacking in variation. I certainly didn't intend to imply that with my original pos...

Re: Clothing and Clothing Inspiration for Concultures

Yinrih don't wear clothes. No eros also means no modesty, and having fur obviates the need for sun and cold protection. They do wear protective gear like armor or rain coats. Aside from that, they make heavy use of pockets to make up for their inability to hold objects while walking. Backpacks, poc...

Clothing and Clothing Inspiration for Concultures

I'm working on a fantasy space story. Without getting too deep into things, plants and plant based fibers are the most resistant materials against the negative effects of the aether throughout the universe, but there's little or no danger of depressurization. So the cheapest option for space uniform...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Could an argument be made for including /t/ as a possible coda but not any other stops by saying that the language has a preference for coronal consonants in general? It's for a non-human language but they are fairly humanoid, so I'd like to keep details and reasoning for why things are how they are...

Currently in Nyango it looks like <kache> /ka.tSe/. Cognate with Japanese かけ, an archaic term for chicken.

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

When I make conlangs that have clusters, I just kinda go with what sounds good or derive them from a proto-lang using the tips above so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ but I've mostly been focusing on my Japanlang for cats, so I'm not sure how much help that is.

Oblong countable objects vs non-oblong non-countable objects Is this intended as a joke? Or, that could actually be a valid gender system.. different shape classes. Japanese (in part) makes use of different counters for different shaped things. Not specifically a gender system but maybe it could be...

Re: Anybody else working on conlangs with non-human phonologies?

I'm considering whether and how I'd make Nyango less human in phonology. It's based on Old Japanese and in universe develops alongside the Japanese language, however, it is spoken by cat youkai, some of which can transform to look/sound/act human and others who can't. So I figure some of the allopho...

Re: Which conlangs are you working on and/or still plan to work on?

I have my cat language, Nyango, which is derived from Old Japanese and affected by Japanese at various stages, but is mostly pretty conservative in some ways and innovative in a few unique areas. I haven't quite gotten the balance of innovation and conservation that I like just yet.

Re: What are the Benefits of Conlang ?? (on a practical and personal level)

I've been focusing on a conlang alt history relative of Japanese. It's forced me to use and look up more Japanese than I might otherwise use in my day to day life. (I don't have many people to speak with and I've had a hard time finding more realistic media that I enjoy.) I've also learned the histo...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Yes, (one way of analysing) word tone, I know, but I still don't understand what your actual question is. Maybe you could give some examples? Say there's the word /ni.kaː.ta/, and it has a falling tone on the second syllable, thus the second mora has the high tone. Would the first syllable then als...

Re: How would one form roots?

Different people have different ways of going about it. Since you're basing your language on existing languages, you could look up how their roots are shaped. As an example that I know more about, Japanese on its face is a mostly (C)V language, but can have long vowels, a syllabic nasal or a lengthe...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

I google translated 'I love you' into Japanese and it gave 愛してます。 Aishitemasu. It apparently just means 'love'. Is there some politeness thing or something that hints thats 'I love you' instead of, say, 'He loves her'? Japanese often doesn't use pronouns as it's kind of expected to be obvious from ...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Which other high vowels? PIE had only /i/ and /u/ as high vowels. Don't honestly know much about Indo European linguistics ... I suppose I had the misconception that the RUKI rules happened after proto-Germanic (or whatever branch it applies to) had already gained more vowels. I stand corrected. Bu...
