Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
What vocabulary is almost never derived? I know that demonstratives are pretty much never derived, and personal pronouns are only occasionally so, but since adpositions can come from verbs or possessive phrases, and conjunctions like "and" (at least in English, anyway) derive from adjectiv...

Re: Overcoming the first hurdle
I get to my first hurdle when making all the root words I’ll use to derive the grammar later on down the line. It can be a tedious process deciding how I want the imperative to form or whatever. I just remind myself of the immense pride I felt when my first conlang was “done” (placed in quotation ma...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
These are all very good responses! I was frustrated how lots of my conlangs had combinations of features found in the real world and I wanted to have something a bit more diverse. What I didn’t want to do was stretch credulity past the breaking point

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
What kind of linguistic features always co-occur? Which ones are mutually exclusive? Although I’m sure it exists I can’t think of a language off the top of my head that has both tone and grammatical case (for example)

Re: Random phonology/phonemic inventory thread
On WALS online I see Eyak has neither bilabials nor nasals and Maxakalí has no fricatives nor nasals, so I have to wonder… what about a language with no bilabials or fricatives? I may have to revisit that idea Here's another, possibly more exotic possibility: n ŋ t d k g q ʔ tʰ kʰ qʰ t’ k’ q’ w ɾ i...

The Annals of the Fornaxium
Hello, all! This forum will be where I post worldbuilding information about my setting, the Fornaxium (derived from Latin fornax , meaning "forge"). Any input is much appreciated, because I only know enough to know I know very little. As a note, names will be placeholders that don't have r...

How do applicatives form? I’ve got a proto-lang and I want it’s daughter to have benefactive, locative, and instrumental applicatives but I’m not sure from what they descend or how they get attached to the verb You can form them from serial verb compounds. For example, with an instrumental you coul...

Re: Conlanging Features you Avoid
I’ve never liked implosives, especially the palatal implosive. They just seem like so much more work to pronounce than other consonants. Also coda /r/ (the trill, that is) annoys me personally because /i/ is hard for me to pronounce before it. And the vowel /æ/ feels like nails on a chalkboard to me...

Mee (Ekari, Ekagi) has a velar lateral/uvular affricate sound and no fricatives. UPSID also mentions Andamanese and Panare with less exotic affricates and no fricatives. I was thinking of doing the following system, after challenging myself to have a particularly simple phonology: m n ɲ (ny) p t k ...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
How do languages with multiple degrees of past tense emerge? What auxiliary verbs/constructions do they come from? I'm looking to have four past tenses in this new language I'm working on and I'm struggling to understand how such things come about

A, A#, B, C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G# Those are the twelve tones of western music, of which all western music is comprised in all genres and time periods. If you used this method you could “translate” classical pieces backwards or write a pop melody that encodes actual linguistic information So, ...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
I love the concept behind Solresol: a language that can use music and colors to express sentences. However, I find the execution of Solresol to be lackluster. My biggest qualm are the syllables. I get they are based on music notes: do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, si, but I find that only seven of them is ...
