Sorry about back-to-back posting. Will be spending some time AFK during this vacation, and I want to make sure the pages are accounted for. Hopefully, I won't have to make these huge posts as much in the future. They are awfully cumbersome, for both reader and writer. Some sects of Neoshamanism beli...

Linguistics videos

Just a general thread for linguistics videos. No need to be a youtuber - it could be on any other site, or made by anyone.
Found this video of Haida speakers just today. I used to watch this over and over years ago.

Reg. public bathing in particular, I think it could be kept. To this day humans practice it. Been to these before - it's only hard because it's weird to be naked around others, who are also naked. But yinrih don't wear clothes, so... yeah. Heck, in Ancient Rome, bathing was public, and viewed as the...

Comic with world building

(Edit: I found it thanks to CriminalMammal. I'm sorry for not crediting where due.) Recently found this cool comic: https://www.webtoons.com/en/canvas/the-book-written-by-tiny-paws/list?title_no=890792 https://www.tumblr.com/nolinno-art The language and math system used is honestly really interesting.

Re: Philosophy Thread

Now this is a well-said refutation. Yes, the subjectivity makes finding objectivity a problem. Yes, an axiom is needed to solve this. My complaint here is that your phrase "once one has that" has obscured the entirety of what makes this problem intractable. How does one get that axiom in a...

Re: Philosophy Thread

I would say to balance the number of axioms, or at least be really good at teleology. The world is complex, and our thought systems should at least have some complexity so they work with the world around us.

What is the definition of a "prophet" in Claravianism? Who was the last one alive? Is there apocrypha? Does the Protocanon contain only religious material? What are the names of proto canon and deuterocanon in Commonthroat? Does the Protocanon retain literary influence for archaicisms (lik...

Re: Philosophy Thread

Well, you've kinda just stumbled into Kalam territory with that last phrase. That's the path I follow. I feel we can do something like that with the definition of good also. One needs an axiom of some kind, but once one has that, they can expand the idea of good it gives. This is one reason why anal...

Re: Philosophy Thread

As for the existence of objective trancendental goodness, I do think such a thing exists. The problem is, even if such a thing did exists, it still wouldn’t be objectively good becuase you would still have to justify why it is good. Even with some divine standard, true objective morality is impossi...

Re: Philosophy Thread

Thanks for the math correction. Suppose it's a dead simple action (say like swatting a mosquito for someone). Is it still theoretical that it can be totally good? (Personally I say no, because it is very difficult to achieve totally pure intentions. But that doesn't mean a person can't get extremely...

I'm not sure about myself, but my mother doesn't like click consonants.
Nothing to do with Africa though. It's because she works will little kids.

Re: Max consonants challenge

If I recall correctly, clicks are basically when the main airflow of the consonant is inwards as opposed to outwards. Otherwise, I'm not sure. African clicks come off to me as an areal feature if anything, and an older one (though, not necessarily one where all its members are related). I personally...

Re: The Lonely Galaxy Megathread (comments encouraged)

I was thinking the same about Shamanism, on both points. (I read too much about meditation and esotericism over the time away.) I think it'd then be best to characterize Shamanism as a movement rather than one religion, similar to Taoist, Early Christian, and Gnostic schools - like technically simil...

Re: Resources for a posteriori conlangs?

I can't recommend anything in particular, but studying creoles and new language emergence (such as Young Lardil and Antarctic English) would be a good idea.
Also I keep misreading the title as posterior languages, pardon the immaturity.

(Not that they're bad, just that its funny.)

The Village Real thing in societies. "Mumbo-jumbo," the religious practices of the Selk'nam, and more. I think abduction (e.g. something similar to the Hamats'a cult) and initiation systems with made-up truths each time could be great for this. Many offices in the Bright Way have a master...

I look in Tim's direction, and what is (or I guess was in some cases) on the hallway walls.
"Is it possible the Partisans will just breach the ship by accident? How thick are these walls? What is on them in any case?"
