Re: Conworlders' religious influences on conworlds

Salam! I'm a Muslim and I think Islam strongly influences my conworlds, although not always in ways that would be immediately apparent to readers. Then again, so do my anarchism, my heretical nature, my Bokononism, and my love of the Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind comics or the music of Hirasawa...

Re: Creature concept

I don't think their prey would necessarily have to be elephant sized—or indeed, even as large as the predator in question. There can be evolutionary pressures that cause an animal to grow larger other than having large prey. If there is enough available food to support a large size, size can be sele...

Re: "Remix Earth"

I once tried a sorghum beer because they were selling it for one dollar at a bar. It was probably the single most foul thing I have ever put in my mouth. It tasted like mud and porridge with an after taste of old pennies. Nice! I don't drink so I've never tried sorghum alcohols. Mud and porridge an...

Re: "Remix Earth"

What about sorghum molasses (made from sorghum stalks instead of sugar cane or sugar beets)? Has anyone on-board ever tried sorghum molasses? I'm a huge fan of sorghum molasses, especially with some grits. I mentioned that the people of my conculture use sorghum syrup, often reduced, which is exact...

Re: "Remix Earth"

I'm surprised by all the sorghum hate, I actually happen to like sorghum flatbread in comparison to wheat flatbreads I wouldn't say I hate sorghum just that it isn't my favorite. I'm a sucker for my wheat flatbreads but I think sorghum is pretty sick, that's why I used it so prominently in my world...

Re: "Remix Earth"

Just a personal experience, but I really don't like sorghum. The idea of a sorghum-and-bean malt slurry baked until it makes a dry, mealy "flatbread" sounds like a good way to dread every meal. But maybe the saffron makes it better. Yeah sorghum isn't my personal favorite either. I used t...

Re: "Remix Earth"

Very fun. The monsoonal grassland habitat is not a common focus for conworlding projects. If you get sick of sorghum sugar, palm sugar would also grow in these irrigated gardens. Yes! Palms are very important to the civilizations of this world, the one I've described above doesn't make as much use ...

Re: "Remix Earth"

I really love/appreciate your world map - how did you determine what regions would have what climates? I've reached both extremes of waving a hand and saying magic did it, versus modeling ocean currents to determine realistic average temperatures, so I love to hear other people's processes. I model...

Re: "Remix Earth"

Here's a more concrete question than simply "hey do you have feedback"; what earth cultures does the culture I described remind you of? What sort of aesthetics are you picturing? I tried to not just copy one earth culture, but of course I drew inspiration from many. I'm curious which ones ...

Re: "Remix Earth"

So, I wrote up a brief summary of the culture I'm currently working on a conlang for, and while it was written just for my own notes I thought I may as well post it here and see if I get any responses/feedback! None of this is set in stone since this culture existed thousands of years before most of...

"Remix Earth"

I decided to make a thread about one of my worldbuilding projects, in case anyone is interested! And what better place to start than with a map? Note that this is still a rough draft, eventually I plan to add more nuance to the climates but right now they serve as an indication of what general types...

Re: Qíʳ Bȁˀ Gàˀⁿ ( Dialect of Hmïőˀ Hmïőʰ Shéⁿ Kúʰ)

I love this romanization. It's kind of everything you're "not supposed to do", at least according to the opinions I've mostly seen and heard (I generally hear the opinion that romanizations should exist to give a clear and easy sense to your readers on how to pronounce the language). Howev...

Re: Introduction thread(s)

Hopefully you won't skimp on the worldbuilding posts here, either! Your descriptions sound delicious! I plan to eventually post some sketches of some of my conlangs, once some early drafts are ready to be shared, I'll make sure and write about the cultures they are from as well! And the food, of co...

Salam! My name is Soraya. I'm an aspiring novelist (recently finished the first draft of my first novel), and I've been obsessed with worldbuilding my whole life. As a kid I mostly was into speculative evolution (Dougal Dixon was my everything), although I also dabbled in creating fonts/made up scri...

Re: How NOT to Conworld.

I hope it isn't too necro to reply to this. One of my biggest pet-peeves (it isn't necessarily "bad conworlding" it just personally is unappealing to me) is when there are concultures that are very transparent analogues of Earth cultures. You know, you've got your fantasy Romans, your fant...

Evolving Split Ergativity

First time posting, I hope I'm not breaking any rules! lmk if I am. I'm working on a (supposedly) naturalistic conlang where one of the goals I set for myself at the beginning was to have split ergativity, where clauses with a first or second person subject would be treated as nominative/accusative ...
