Re: Any patterns behind stress shifting / preserving affixes?

I don't know whether stress-shifting (or stress-defining) affixes tend to be more recently grammaticalised, but I'm confident that more recently grammaticalised affixes will tend to be less integrated into the regular stress rules. Thank you for your reply. It clears a lot up for me. I think you've...

Re: If natlangs were conlangs

Is it just me, or is English the most poorly designed international auxiliary language? If you're designing an IAL, wouldn't you want your language to be easily learned by as many people around the world as possible? Yet English includes unusual sounds like /θ/ and the grammar so irregular (why is t...

Re: Any patterns behind stress shifting / preserving affixes?

Thank you to everyone so far. This is all helping me think about the problem more deeply. One issue is my conlang has phonemic stress. So it's hard for me to apply some set of changes to the "normal" stress patterns, because I haven't defined any. But maybe I am misunderstanding how lexica...

Re: Nooha language

- verbs are a closed class - light verbs are common So the light verb constructions would be used in place of coining or deriving new verbs, right? I had no idea that this was a thing, but I just started reading about languages that work like this. I learned something new today - thanks! And a very...

Any patterns behind stress shifting / preserving affixes?

I'm working on derivational affixes for my conlang. I want some of them be stress shifting. After looking at examples from natural languages, I have some ideas of how that would work. But what I can't tell is if there are any qualities that would predict whether an affix is likely to be stress shift...

Re: Yeh ConScript

Thank you both for the feedback! I think, with a few tweaks, this will be the final writing system I go with.
I've tried writing it freehand, and it's fairly simple to write out as well.
I suspect it would make for some cool tattoos as well.

Yeh ConScript

This is a script for the Yeh language . It's written right to left, with a pen. Most glyphs represent a consonant + vowel sequence. Six of the glyphs represent a syllable consisting of a single vowel. There are also a few consonant-only glyphs for use in consonant clusters and syllable codas. Due to...

Re: What did you accomplish today?

I more or less decided on a final set of prepositions for Yeh . I incorporated some feedback and inspiration I got from this board. This community is so helpful, and I'm grateful for the feedback. I learn a lot just by reading others posts. My goal is to get to a point where I can do some translatio...

Re: right size of preposition inventory?

Thank you everyone for your responses. I'm now more confident that sticking to this smaller set of prepositions wouldn't be infeasible or unnatural. But I will have to be clever in how the prepositions are reused to convey different relationships. Your examples and suggestions have given me a lot of...

right size of preposition inventory?

I've hit a snag in my conlang, and was wondering if anyone could chime in. I'm deciding on prepositions for my conlang, "Yeh" . So far I have 11. Here's what I have so far: https://rentry.co/hq8af I want to avoid relexing English. To prevent that, I'm trying to divide the semantic space di...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

A borderline case, or at least point of interest, is apparently Spanish, where the general pattern of stress can be deviated from lexically in the process of derivation: Most masculine nouns in Somali have stress on the penultimate while most feminine nouns have stress on the last syllable. Tongan ...

Re: (L&N) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Is anyone here aware of any languages, besides English, with a derivational stress suprafix? English has initial-stress-derived nouns , but I'm wondering if there are other cross-linguistic examples of stress derivation. I spent an afternoon searching around, but I'm not coming up any good results. ...

Re: Feedback for Written Numerical System

So rabbitse is seven rabbits, but cenose is not seven hundred... it's 100 + 70, is that correct? I found that confusing. Would it be valid to say "to meno se ceno" ? Would that mean 3700? Or would it only be proper to say "to meno se". I'm assuming only the latter is allowed, bec...

Re: The Yeh Language - An incomplete grammar

Interesting read. I am a bit surprised by the phonological process that applies to two nasal consonants. Does it also apply if nasals are identical? So, e.g /m/+/m/ -> [ɲ]? Or to clusters that do not involve any nasal further back in the mouth? I.e. /m/+/n/ -> [ɲ]? I'm glad you found it interesting...

The Yeh Language - An incomplete grammar

This is my first description of grammar in the Yeh language. It's incomplete - just enough to make some simple sentences. I'll flesh more out as time goes on. https://idioma.neverheardof.me/grammar.html I also have a phonology and numeral system previously worked out. https://idioma.neverheardof.me/...

Thank you both so much for the advice. As you could probably tell, I haven't done a lot of glossing before, and it's so helpful to get feedback from someone more experienced. Three Glossing Questions

I am translating some example sentences in my conlang, to demonstrate how the grammar works. But I had a few questions about interlinear glosses. 1. My conlang has an enclitic, -më that marks a verb argument as an agent (as opposed to patient). This is applied to the subject in transitive sentences,...

Re: Morphological Operations without Morphemes

Yes to both. Grammatical tone is a type of suprasegmental morphology. Well, maybe some people would rather call it morphophonology, I don't know. Doesn't matter. Thank you for confirming that. Sometimes I'm not sure what to call things, and knowing that someone else reached the same answer is reass...

Morphological Operations without Morphemes

Finally got around to reading "Describing Morphosyntax" by Thomas Payne. I haven't gotten very far yet. There's a part of the book that discusses how morphology is more than just "chunks" of roots and affixes adding up to a final meaning, and it gives an example from Maasai where...
