Re: The flight-lang--A concept I'd really like to share

My main thought was that I'm not sure if the language could actually be used. I'd imagine that past a certain speed of movement/wind, sound of any form would be lost. It might depend on how fast your speakers are actually moving, how they are positioned in regards to each other and what the weather...

The flight-lang--A concept I'd really like to share

This is the concept for a language. The only reason I haven't plunged into the syntax or the grammar for it yet is that it's a sister language to my main conlang, Manaic, and that language needs to have it's grammar settled enough for me to back-engineer more traits of their common ancestor. But I f...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Hey so... This might be a dumb question but I can't find anything in WALS about it and google is not being helpful. Can a language have object-verb agreement instead of subject-verb? Could it develop from a language that makes the verb agree with both somehow and people stopped bothering with the su...

Re: The relative clause can't have a subject... wait, WHAT?

So, first things first: are you aware you're doing something very strange here? It's OK if you are, but if you're doing it accidentally it may be confusing you. So, relativisation combines two clauses: the main clause, and the relative clause. Headed relatives (we'll ignore headless ones for now) l...

Re: The relative clause can't have a subject... wait, WHAT?

How would you say "the donkey that threw the onion into the fire", where the head of the relative clause is its subject? That's a good question... If I just obeyed the default word order and did nothing else, it would be: /PSV-throw-PST donkey onion fire-DAT into-PST/ Where the passive pr...

The relative clause can't have a subject... wait, WHAT?

Hello, I am a bit new to this still. I ended up working on relative clauses already. I have something that seems to function fairly well, but... I'm not entirely clear on what roles some of the words are taking. And anything you don't understand about your own language is a disaster waiting to happe...

Re: The Sixth Conversation Thread

So, I was telling my mother about my conlang, that I'm still trying to pin down the grammar of. (And I'm well aware how lucky I am that my mother is also the sort of person who finds conlang cool.) But I tell her that it's going to have four nominal genders (animate/inanimate based for the sake of s...

Re: How should I start creating/writing my (reference) grammar?

Keeping the above advice in mind, here's a small tip from another beginner: For all I know you may already do this, but try doing some stages of the work on paper in a notebook rather than on a computer. Paper notebooks lend themselves wondrously to experimenting, iterating, scrawling down ideas etc...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Thank you to everyone who answered my question: the answers were amazingly helpful. Especially the theorizing on what kind of history might have caused the prepositions and it's previous word order and the pointer to WALS.

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Sorry about that. It just shows the order of things in relation to the noun. I picked this set from a chart by a guy called Artifexian on youtube, because he made a handy spreadsheet for word order universals. Like I said, I'm new to this, but I'm determined to learn. I thought it might be safer to ...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here

Quick question (per thread title.)
I am a little bit new to this and ears-deep in a syntax headache. If your syntax rules go like this:
N.Posp Dem.N N.Num Poss.N N.Adj Gen.N N.Rel

Can you still have prefixes?
I was planning to make the plural markers prefixes if I could.

Word definitions and making less distinctions

I've noticed, at least for myself, that it can be a lot easier to make a new distinction in your conlang that your native language doesn't than to do the opposite. The world is filled with other natlangs and conlangs that make cool distinctions you might have never thought of. But if you keep doing ...

Re: My first conlang's phonological inventory--how does it look?

The single palatal consonant will probably get a history added to explain it now that you've pointed that out. Would you think it would be more likely for it to be the only survivor of a sound change where the other palatals were lost, or picked up from another language? The first thing I'd ask is ...

Re: My first conlang's phonological inventory--how does it look?

Thank you for the feedback! It really helps me out to know what's unusual and what's not. "Perfectly ordinary with a few quirks" is what I was hoping for. The single palatal consonant will probably get a history added to explain it now that you've pointed that out. Would you think it would...

My first conlang's phonological inventory--how does it look?

I did my best to make this naturalistic. It may still be a bit similar to English, but I'm happy with it unless you guys catch something glaringly unlikely to occur in a real language. The highlighted sounds are the inventory. The one in light green is technically in the language, but it's considere...

Would speakers of this language have trouble pronouncing English?

Hello. This is my first experience with making a conlang. I've been doing my research and putting together a phonology, and so far I have the consonants mostly figured out. One goal I had in mind for the language was for it to be decently "co-learnable," because an established fact of the ...
