Re: The Lonely Galaxy Megathread (comments encouraged)
Indeed! An interesting and creative (if slightly disturbing) alternative form of parental feeding of their young. An addendum: Wormcows are regarded much like Terran cattle--placid, slow-moving herd animals that aren't too bright. Their sheer girth is both a blessing and a curse, as it attracts pre...

Wormcows
On the terrestrial planets and some of the larger moons closer to Focus, the most abundant livestock animal raised for its meat is the wormcow. As their name implies, wormcows are long tubular creatures. They're about the length of a school bus and are as big around as a yinrih's height at the withe...

Re: Commonthroat: a language that only a dog could probably pronounce
Back to the drawing board with the third Romanization and the transfer of my lexicon to Obsidian. For some odd reason Obsidian doesn't like combining diacritics. It messes with the search function for some reason. it doesn't think <-h̄ḡ> exists even though it clearly does. Right now the romanization...

Re: The Multiverse Inn
Hey! I't was a fashion thing Okay "Well there's no accounting for taste," says Doug. "I suppose I shouldn't talk, having been into the whole baldness trend myself back in my younger days." He runs his rust red claws through the khaki fur on his tail. "Blessed Guts has a poi...

Re: What did you accomplish today?
I've ported my Commonthroat lexicon from Excel to Obsidian. This should allow for much richer and deeper documentation, more closely mirroring the lore-heavy lexeme posts I make in the CT thread here. I've also changed the romanization again, this time to avoid the use of capitals. The lexicon now u...

Re: Commonthroat: a language that only a dog could probably pronounce
What about doubling long vowels? Sometimes there's a hiatus between two identical short vowels. <sCqgg> (novice healer). The first short low weak growl <g> is part of the root, and the second is the 3rd person indefinite suffix. Maybe use an apostrophe to indicate hiatus? Nah, the scheme with macro...

Re: Commonthroat: a language that only a dog could probably pronounce
I think I'll go with option 2 for the third romanization, but continue using the current second romanization on the forum here. It's the least different from the current system and only uses a single diacritic that I can keep in the clipboard if I can't find/make a keyboard layout for it.

Attempts at a third romanization scheme
OK, so my first romanization scheme used vowels, and I didn't like that because it gave the impression that this was a human-pronounceable language, and it used both capital <i> and lowercase <L>. My second romanization which I have been using for the majority of this thread simply removed the vowel...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
Anybody know of software or a website that allows you to very quickly enter arbitrary unicode characters? What I'm imagining is a site where there's an onscreen keyboard and a text box. When you click on any of the keys on the onscreen keyboard, it brings up a menu of unicode characters to choose fr...

Re: Forum News discussion/feedback thread
I fear we may have to go the ZBB route of two-step verification. That’s two spammers in, what, the space of a week? More than two, and there's probably others I haven't seen. It baffles me that people go out of their way to QRM tiny sites like this when social media megacorps like Facebook Meta, Tw...

Case Insensitivity
So it turns out a lot of software is case-insensitive, including Excel and anything that uses hyperlinks. I may have to redo the romanization for Commonthroat to get rid of the case distinction. Not sure how I'll do that. It needs to be easy to type and not look horrible.

On The Light and interspecies ecumenism
The Light is the most common title given to the being worshiped by the Bright Way. It is a non-contingent incorporeal entity possessing a will and intellect that exists independent of the universe, outside of spacetime, and is said to have brought it into being. It is neither male nor female. Posses...

Re: The Other Languages of Focus
Here’s an idea: what if stress in the pidgin is derived from volume in Commonthroat? Commonthroat has weak, strong, strengthening, and weakening volumes for syllables. I think the deepest stress goes in human languages is primary and secondary stress. Could be wrong, though. I also want to make thi...

🐒🦊🕊️
Some ideas for Monkey Fox Pidgin (MFP or 🐒🦊🕊️) The language slowly grows among yinrih-raised humans, becoming well-established around 200 years after First Contact. It would be the first language of Sherman from the Multiverse Inn, for example. It's most prevalent on Hearthside, since the planet has...

Re: The Other Languages of Focus
How much do you plan to expand the YPA (Yinrih Phonetic Alphabet)? Well if I want to keep to my romanization criteria of no vowel letters and being easy to type, I have T, V, W, X, and Z to work with. Hisses cannot carry tone but they can carry strength and timing. There is a plain and a trilled hi...

The Other Languages of Focus
Some other langs I want to develop at some point along with some tentative features Monkey Fox Pidgin: a creole language that first developed among humans raised by Claravian fostering orders on Hearthside. It consists of Commonthroat and Hearthsider grammar on top of mostly English-derived lexemes....

The Eschaton
The Eschaton, or Omega Point, is, according to Claravian doctrine, the ultimate end state of the universe. It is the point at which the epistemological Realm of the Known finally fills the Realm of the Knowable and breaches the hitherto impassable boundary obscuring the Realm of the Unknowable, brid...

Re: The Lonely Galaxy Megathread (comments encouraged)
What’s the yinrih equivalent to social media? With the exception of their lack of libido and their less private bathroom habits, yinrih have the same social impulses as humans, so they have similar social media... if your conception of social media were frozen in the late 90s. The sort of rich mult...
