Re: Reflexive Conethnography
Are the Nhginhgeqmba communists ? For a Nolikan, communism would be plainly idiotic but American-style capitalism wouldn't be very clever too. "Third position" would probably make most sense. As far as religion goes, Islam and Judaism would be most familiar. On the other hand, the Meljanes...

Re: Largest Inflection table
But as for irregular and thus large... French verbs and German nouns... come to mind. There are many paradigms in both cases. German nouns ? They have only four cases and what is inflected is not the noun itself, but the article. Polish (and probably all Slavic) nouns are very complicated, with 6-7...

Re: Your Culture's RPG Alignment
I am not familiar with RPG, but the "good/evil" distinction makes lot of sense if we assume that it is inspired by Tolkien. In real world, I think that cultures cannot be "good" or "evil". North Korea may be an evil state, but not Korean culture in general. Invading Afg...

The vowel system seems to be copied from English "short" vowels. Consonants, however, are OK.

Re: Naming Conlangs
I usually invent a name and then give it a translation: Nolikan (Noliki) has really no meaning, but probably meant 'familiar' originally. Yoketian (Yōkettu) means '(language) of the nurturing place' Meljanese (ika-Melźań) is distorted form of earlier ik-amal-źeń 'language of the great horsemen' It's...

What happened to the colonies to make them lose their technology? Learning about complicated technologies is a hard work, isn't it ? Welfare tends to make people lazy and less likely to study complicated equations. This can make hi-tech societies less stable than sci-fi fans would like them to be. ...

Re: Hated Phonemes!
I hate palatalized consonants. They sound so childish. Among other consonants, /p/ sounds funny, but too much of it is unpleasant.
Among vowels, /ʉ/ sounds stupid.

You both are right because [ɥ] is to [j] what [y] is to and [y] is nothing but with lip rounding.

Re: What got you started in Conlanging?
First version of Nolikan was created in 1999 and it consisted of a wordlist only (because I realized the conpeople need a language of their own). Some words I made at that time are still present, such as dode 'road' or muryo 'cat'. Later I added some Arabic, Persian and Chechen words which I learned...

Re: Aqcin language
The name is similar to Nolikan word for boy (axčin). The specialty of the language are large mental terminology and categories. In their good days the Aqcins worked commonly as psychologists. For example a very strong curse word in Aqcin is ‘ruochâq’, meaning Alzheimer’s disease. Great idea, but mor...

Yes. Milion works like a collective noun, not a numeral.Maximillian wrote:Is żołnierzy a genitive case for "soldiers"?LetoAtreides wrote:"milion żołnierzy zwycięża" (million soldiers win) vs "żołnierze zwyciężają" (soldiers vin)

Re: Plural conjugation for collective nouns?
In Polish, collective nouns, including names of large numbers, must be followed by verbs in third person singular, as in "milion żołnierzy zwycięża" (million soldiers win) vs "żołnierze zwyciężają" (soldiers vin)

Re: Why is it that most IALs simply dont work? (very long)
I would even suggest that languages approach unusability (or at least, undesirability) if they try too hard to eliminate vagueness and ambiguity. There are plenty of times when people like to be vague, and if the language doesn't want to let them, they will change the language so they can. Mayne th...

Re: Why is it that most IALs simply dont work? (very long)
Even the best IAL would have hard time competing with popular natural languages. Even if noone bothers to learn French as a foreign language, you still can communicate with >50 million native speakers. It is highly improbable that 50 mln people learn Esperanto.
