Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
Any ideas how infixes arise? I know analogised metathesis is one way, but I wanted to find a way for vowel infixing. make your verb (or whatever youre modifying) into a circumfix while the element in the middle remains dynamic. e.g. proto-Pumpkin lapala "to speak" vs bu lapala "spoke...

I used evidentials.... feel/see/hear=1/2/3. Also feel/see/Ø would work.

and I just use logical strategies to choose whether a word should be included or not. For example; nēr for "man". But then I realise Quenya already uses nér (ner-) for "man"! for what its worth, that word is also in IE with that meaning ... c.f. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sch...

Quenya's not perfect. Find something in it you can do better....even if its a small thing.....and maybe that'll help.

Re: Have you created any idioms in your conlangs? What are some examples?
Poswa is entirely without idioms as well, since the grammar depends on having only one word in each role in a sentence. That is, a phrase cannot substitute for a word. There are a few compounds whose meanings are slightly more than sum-of-parts, and some derived forms of certain words likewise, but ...

Probably, but scholars differ widely on what can and cannot be explained as native derivation. Germanic is one of the later-attested branches, after all, and one of the more rapidly changing ones too. For example , some see Germanic words with geminate consonants as evidence for borrowing from a sub...

I realized that I've been saying Silvish's word for "thank you" wrong for forever. Dontcha just love it when you notice a sound change you added a long time ago affects a really common word, but you never applied it? [xP] Anyway, as it turns out, Silvish speakers say marchif [mɑˈɕif] to s...

Are the blue lines 60N-30N-0-30S-60S? Just making sure .... thats what my first impression was. I figured its meant to be a Mercator projection or something similar. I see similarities with Europe & Africa and also with the USA. You might be able to model the equatorial sea after the Caribbean. ...

FrathWiki is very nice, yes. I use it also. Most of my sound changes are at http://www.frathwiki.com/Languages_of_Teppala .... I use a custom CSS that makes all italics show as red, and all bold show as blue, so what looks like a wall of text to most people is very easy to read for me. My lexicons a...

So, I've got another climate question (maybe I'm just overthinking this). I've got this rough sketch of a planet: https://i.postimg.cc/Yqz5vjpL/rough-map.png All I'm entirely certain about is that there will be a circumpolar current around the north pole and a circum-equatorial current which doesn'...

It'd be worth finding out what normally leads to word initial /h/ in albanian and seeing if its a believable etymology. Albanian has such a late attestation that this word may simply be unrelated to the "orchis" family.

My own favourite conlang for myself has all the linguistic features that I want, except its logical restrictions ofc. It's not perfect or ideal, but I don't expect it to be. Still, I can use it proficiently and appropriately whereby I can't find such satisfaction any natlang or other conlang. Howev...

I don't know about natlangs but.. with Poswa I add an /s/ 😛... works for me. sababum pobbažo "the men are talking to me" vs sababum pobbažos vepababa "as the men are talking to me, theyre tilling soil".... In other words, it's a serial verb construction. If you have an affix that...

The English word splurged can be analyzed as CCCCCCC if you call the vowel a syllabic consonant and analyze the g as /dž/. Quoting the whole post below because I bumped: 1. What fraction of the world’s languages have several syllable-onset consonant-clusters containing 5 or more consonants? 1a. What...

Re: (Conlangs) Q&A Thread - Quick questions go here
I've hedged my bets on this by saying that the bare /u/ vowel is unrounded by default in Khulls, and that the labialized allophone is hyper-rounded in Poswa. I don't know of a language that has contrasts like that without at least some audible vowel allophony. But I haven't looked much outside IE, J...

How do you handle a world where there are defined gods (or a defined god) as well as a hard magic system? Would there be multiple religions and only one of them be right? One religion with minor variations? There are many cultures and many haven't interacted with each other at all, so I feel like o...
